Second-half goals put Hamrun back on track

Hamrun Spartans scored twice in the second half to beat Santa Lucia 2-0 at the Centenary Stadium on Sunday.

The Spartans therefore returned to winning ways following the 2-4 defeat to Zebbug Rangers, extending the lead on top the BOV Premier League table to seven points over second-place Hibernians.

Hamrun could have taken the lead on the 27th when they were awarded a penalty after Luke Montebello was brought down inside the area by Michael Johnson but goalkeeper Matthew Calleja Cremona saved Montebello’s effort from the penalty spot in two attempts.

The Spartans, however, managed to break the deadlock on the 61st minute when off a good move between a number of players, Luke Montebello served Elvis Mashike who hit the ball home from close range.

Eight minutes later, Hamrun sealed the issue with a second goal courtesy of Ailton Jorge Soares who pounced onto a through pass on the left and advanced before beating Calleja Cremona with a fine shot in the top right corner.
