Malta faces Czech Republic in friendly match

malta-in-austria-day-1-2006Malta faces the Czech Republic in a friendly match at the Kufstein Arena in Kufstein, Austria on Friday, kick-off at 18:00. The first of two friendly matches for Malta in five days against two EURO 2016 finalists as part of the national team’s preparations ahead of next Autumn’s European Qualifiers leading to the 2018 FIFA World Cup. For the Czech Republic, this will be the first of three tests before they leave for France where they will be facing holders Spain, Croatia and Turkey in Group D.

This will be the third friendly match for Malta after the end of the EURO qualifiers where Pietro Ghedin’s side earned two points in two draws with Bulgaria and Azerbaijan. In the two friendly matches, Malta played Jordan in Istanbul last November, losing 0-2, and then drew 0-0 with Moldova at Ta’ Qali in March.

Testimonial match for Gilbert Agius

gilbert-agiusValletta F.C. will be organising a testimonial match for Gilbert Agius. During this testimonial match, the Valletta F.C. selection will be play a friendly match against Whitegate United. The event will be held at the Luxol Sports Ground on Saturday 4th June at 17:30.

Gilbert Agius started his football career with Luxol St. Andrews nursery before joining his home town club Valletta. He soon settled into the capital city’s senior team and played for the Malta Under-21 side where, notably, he scored Malta’s winning goal against Luxembourg on 21st February 1995. Agius made his Citizens debut at the age of 16 on 2nd September 1990, against Sliema Wanderers. On 7th November 1993, at the age of 19 he made his debut for the senior national side in a 2-1 victory for Malta over Gabon in an international tournament in Tunisia.

Maltese referees for Lennart Johansson Academy Trophy

Elite Development Referees Emanuel Grech and Ismael Barbara, National Referee Alex Johnson, and National Assistant Referee Christopher Azzopardi will be joined by other talented UEFA and FIFA referees from Europe.

Darren Abdilla signs new three-year deal with Gzira United

gzira-unitedAfter leading Gzira United to promotion to the Premier League after an absence of thirty-four years, coach Darren Abdilla committed his future to the club by signing a new three-year deal to form part of the Maroons’ technical staff.

Abdilla’s role will change as the club revealed that it will be appointing a foreign coach with Premier League experience.

New coach for Marsaskala FC

Marsaskala-FCThird Division side Marsaskala FC have appointed Pierre Miceli as their new coach.

Miceli had already served at the club as part of the nursery’s technical staff with the Under-7 and Under-9 categories and coaching goalkeepers. Later, he was appointed coach of the Under-17 side and assistant coach of the senior side in Division 2.
