Malta loses two places in FIFA Ranking

malta-italy141013After suffering two defeats to Norway and Italy in two EURO 2016 qualifiers earlier this month, Malta lost two places and is ranked 157th in the October edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.

Malta is now ranked 50th among the other European countries, just behind Azerbaijan (126, down 31), Luxembourg (126, up 1), Kazakhstan (132, down 5) and Liechtenstein (155, up 17). The only countries lying behind Malta are the Faroe Islands (187, down 8), Andorra (202, up 1) and San Marino (208).

FA Trophy second round to be played this weekend

FA TrophyFourteen clubs from the BOV First Division, another fourteen from the BOV Second Division, six from the BOV Third Division and six from Gozo will be seeking a place in the third round of the FA Trophy as the second round of the competition will be played this weekend.

There are only two clashes between teams from the BOV First Division – St. George’s vs St. Andrews and Pembroke Athleta vs Rabat Ajax but other games to watch out for are those between BOV Second Division promotion hopefuls leaders Hamrun Spartans and First Division side Vittoriosa Stars and promotion hopefuls Senglea Athletic from Division 2 and Mqabba from Division 1.

Under-17 side loses 2-1 to Finland

UEFAUnder17Despite three good performances in Group 8 of the UEFA Under-17 Championship qualifying round, the Malta Under-17 side ended empty-handed following another narrow defeat – this time to Finland at the Stadion FK Srem in Jakovo, Serbia on Wednesday.

Niilo Mäenpää put Finland ahead on the 16th minute but Myles Beerman levelled matters on the 50th. However a penalty by Lucas Lingman two minutes later gave Finland a 2-1 win to finish their commitments ahead of Malta in the group.

Netherlands won Group 8 after defeating hosts Serbia 1-0 in another match on Wednesday.

Nine Premier League players suspended

20110208-101108.jpgNine Premier League players were handed a one-match ban by the MFA Disciplinary Commissioner after the weekend’s matches.

The worst hit were Tarxien Rainbows who had three players suspended, namely Wesley Lima Silva, Owen Bugeja and Matthew Tabone. The other players to be suspended are Marcelo Dias (Hibernians), Andrew Scicluna (Naxxar), Clifford Gatt Baldacchino (Sliema), Luke Dimech (Valletta), Clifford Gauci and Javier Diaz Serrano (Zebbug).

MFRA condemns assault on referee

mosta-groundThe Malta Football Referees’ Association issued a statement in which in condemned an assault on a match official which took place in the referees’ dressing room at the Charles Abela Stadium on Monday after the Youth League match between Gzira United and Kirkop United.

The statement says that this unprovoked assault took place inside the dressing room and the referee was beaten several times and the individual who attacked him had to be restrained by the two assistant referees. The referee was then taken to the Health Centre and a report was filed at the Police Station.

Local players vote for FIFA FIFPro World XI 2014

hogg-voting-fifpro-best-player2014As in previous years, representatives of footballers’ unions are travelling all over the world to invite players to participate in the vote for the FIFA FIFPro World XI 2014. Local players from the Premier Division and First Division join their peers from all over the world and cast their votes, choosing the best performing players of 2014.

MFPA representatives are visiting local clubs to distribute voting forms to players after visiting the Maltese National Team players at the hotel during their free time between the double fixture against Norway and Italy for EURO 2016 qualifications.
