Mauricio Mazzetti joins Birkirkara

bkara-fcBirkirkara and Qormi have reached an agreement over the transfer of Argentine defender Mauricio Matias Mazzetti Latini. As part of the deal, Spanish defender Alejandro Mendoza Corujo will be joining Qormi on loan till the end of the season.

Twenty-eight year old Mauricio Mazzetti had joined Qormi this summer. After playing for San Lorenzo de Cordoba, Talleres, Racing de Córdoba, Trinidad de San Juan and Gimnasia y Esgrima de Mendoza in Argentina, he moved to Europe where he played for FC Emmen in the Netherlands. Later he played for Club Universitario in Bolivia, AEK Kouklia in Cyprus and Dohuk FC in the Iraqi Kurdistan.

Ten Premier League players suspended

National StadiumTen Premier League players were handed a one-match ban by the MFA Disciplinary Commissioner after the matches which were played during the weekend and on Tuesday.

Zach Muscat and Alejandro Mendoza Corujo (Birkirkara), Clayton Failla (Hibs), Albert Bruce (Naxxar), Pedro Henrique dos Santos Calcado and Mark Scerri (Sliema), Triston Caruana, Matthew Tabone and Carlos Hevia Menendez (Tarxien) and Steve Borg (Valletta) are therefore ruled out of the weekend’s matches.

Luke Montebello joins Zebbug on loan

zebbug-rangersLuke Montebello joined Zebbug Rangers from Valletta on loan until the end of the season.

A product of Birkirkara, Montebello joined Italian side Livorno in a joint-ownership deal in summer 2011 and the following season, the Italian club signed him from Birkirkara.

However in summer 2013, he moved back to Malta, signing a five-year deal with Valletta although he had turned out for Birkirkara in the Euro Cup.

Zebbug close in on Pietà, Qormi thanks to dramatic win

BOV-Premier-LeagueZebbug Rangers moved to just two points behind Pietà Hotspurs and Qormi as they came from one goal down to beat the Hotspurs 2-1 with two goals in the final six minutes.

The Hotspurs seemed heading for victory courtesy of an early goal by Orosco Anonam but Zebbug had other thoughts, scoring twice through Mathias Muchardi and Lee Galea to take home three precious points. For Zebbug, this was the second win in three matches.

Dr Samuel Azzopardi elected Gozo FA president

Gozo-Football-AssociationDr Samuel Azzopardi is the new president of the Gozo Football Association replacing Alvin Grech. He was elected to the post after defeating General Secretary Joe Bajada by 21 votes to 11 in an election during an Extraordinary General Meeting of the GFA which was held on Tuesday.

Thirty-two year old Dr Samuel Azzopardi is the Mayor of Victoria and President of the Gozo Region. He is also a member of the Committee of the Regions and a PN candidate for Gozo.
