A good come-back in the second half enabled champions Hibernians to obtain a prestigious 3-3 draw against strong Portuguese outfit Boavista in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round.

After suffering a 4-0 defeat in Porto, Hibernians were determined to obtain a positive result at home. In fact they controlled well their opponents but two goals late in the first half seemed to ruin their chances.

Hibs changed just one player from the team which lost in the first leg, replacing Peter Pullicino by Antoine Zahra. Boavista, on the other hand, lacked two players injured.

After a quiet start, Alexandre Goulart tried his luck with a shot from outside the area which was saved by Muscat on 18 minutes. Nine minutes later, Boavista managed to take the lead. Liberato dribbled Silvio Vella inside the area and beat Mario Muscat with a fine shot. Hardly a minute had passed that they went close to doubling the score as Da Silva almost surprised Muscat following a cross from the right. But on 32 minutes, Hibernians levelled the score. In a counter-attack, Roderick Baldacchino served Adrian Mifsud whose shot hit the foot of the post ending beyond the goal-line despite the Portuguese goalkeeper's desperate attempt.

Boavista regained the lead six minutes later. Rui Oscar advanced into the area, serving Luiz Claudio Barros, whose rising shot gave Mario Muscat no chance. Two minutes later, the score was 3-1. Off a cross by Carlos Ventura, Paulo Cesar Turra found no difficulty in heading the ball past Muscat when left all alone in front of the goalkeeper. Just before the break, a freekick by Adrian Ciantar for Hibernians was saved by Ricardo.

Hibs were back in contention seven minutes in the second half as they reduced the gap. Nigerian striker Ndubisi Chukunyere finished off a cross by Adrian Ciantar as he unleashed a powerful shot which gave the Portuguese goalkeeper no chance. Two minutes later, in an attempt to anticipate Chukunyere, Avalos handled the ball inside the area. Referee Jacobsson had no doubts and ordered a penalty. From the penalty spot, Adrian Mifsud converted.

Boavista tried hard to regain the lead but the Hibs rear-guard did not suffer any particular pressure. Semedo went close on two occasions, first with a header from close range ending just over the bar and then with a low shot turned into a corner by Muscat. A shot by Joaquim Pereira was saved by Muscat following a deflection by a defender on 78 minutes. Just before the final whistle, Hibs could have notched the winner but following a cross from the left by Chukunyere, Essien Mbong had a first attempt blocked by a defender. Off the rebound, the Nigerian midfielder hit high.

A controversial penalty after just 15 minutes paved the way for an easy 4-0 win for Boavista which enables them to secure a place in the Third Qualifying Round of the UEFA Champions League.

As expected, Boavista were without any doubt the better side dominating from start to finish. However the Paolites have only themselves to blame for such a heavy score as at least two of the goals could have easily been avoided.

After that Mario Muscat turned into a corner a fine effort from outsde the area, headers by Alexander and Duda ended off-target. On 15 minutes, Polish referee Mikulsi ordered a rather dubious penalty when Duda ended onto the ground inside the area despite no clear tackle on him by Adrian Pulis. From the penalty spot, Filho Silva made no mistake to put Boavista ahead. Hardly two minutes had passed and the hosts doubled the score. It was Alexander Goulart whose shot from outside the area surprised Mario Muscat to end at the back of the net.

Hibs replied with a counter-attack in which Chukunyere served Baldacchino whose shot ended high. Boavista added another goal on 29 minutes. Filho Silva received a cross from the right and anticipated Aaron Xuereb heading past the goalkeeper.

Hibernians controlled their opponents well in the second half but as it is usually happens, the Paolites suffered another goal in the final stages with Ávalos sealing a 4-0 win for Boavista as he haeded the ball past Muscat following a corner.
