A fine performance by the Citizens, especially during the second half, in face was not enough to spare a defeat which leaves Valletta hardly any chance of reaching the second round.
Valletta lacked the injured Ivan Zammit and David Carabott while Darren Debono and Jeffrey Chetcuti were not available for selection after failing to start pre-season training. Teuta were the better side in the early stages and in one of their first attempts at goal, they managed to take the lead. Off a cross by Olgert Muka from the left on ten minutes, Gentian Begeja headed home. Valletta replied with a header by Gilbert Agius following a cross from the right ending just over the bar. Chris Oretan advanced on the left on 28 minutes but his low shot was parried by Shehi and then a fine shot by Kamil Dvorak on the half-hour was deflected into a corner. Off a cross by Theuma, a header by Chris Oretan was saved by the Albanian keeper eight minutes from the end of the first half. A Rennie Forace effort from the edge of the area ended wide four minutes later. Finally following a series of four consecutive corners for Valletta, Shehi palmed out an insidious corner from the right by Karl Bonnici. In stoppage time, Gilbert Agius went close for Valletta with a fine shot after he managed to dribble two players inside the area. Valletta continued to enjoy the lion's share of ball-possession in the second half. A shot by substitute Antoine Sacco from the left was saved by the Albanian goalkeeper two minutes in the second half. Gilbert Agius crossed from the left on 53 minutes but Shehi managed to deflect the ball before Oretan could conclude. Shehi performed a great save on a fine shot by Gilbert Agius from outside the area following a cross by Bonnici. Then, Agius, served by Oretan inside the area, tested the Albanian custodian with another shot from inside the area but the goalkeeper blocked into a corner. Against the run of play, Teuta doubled the score on 73 minutes when defender Shpetim Imeraj surprised Ernest Barry with a fine shot from the left. Five minutes later, Teuta were reduced to ten men as Babamusta received a second yellow card for a foul on Oretan. Nine minutes from time, Shehi was superb turning into a corner a shot from close-range by Gilbert Agius but from the resulting corner, the Albanian goalie failed to hold Agius' curved shot with the ball ending at the back of the net. In stoppage time, Valletta could have notched the equaliser but a low shot by Agius from outside the area was blocked by Shehi before the ball hits the foot of the post and possibly end in another goal while a goal-bound shot by Chris Oretan was blocked Maczerob Okoro. Just before this attempt, Valletta had Kamil Dvorak sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Toshkallari. | |
