Marsaxlokk could have easily built a comfortable lead during the first half but ended being held in a 1-1 draw by NK Zrinjski in the second leg of the UEFA Intertoto Cup first round after having a player sent off.

The Southseasiders, with two changes from the team which lost 3-0 in Mostar - Reuben Gauci and David Camilleri replacing Reuben Debono and Jamie Pace, showed the better ideas during the first half.

After just two minutes, an insidious cross-shot by Bogdanovic was cleared into safety by Ivica Dzidic. On 26 minutes, the same Bosnian defender floored Bogdanovic inside the area but from penalty spot, Cleavon Frendo hit wide. The visitors replied with a fine Damir Dzidic effort on 28 minutes which was partially saved by Gauci and off the rebound, Zizovic hit incredibly wide.

Marsaxlokk took the lead on 34 minutes. Cleavon Frendo advanced on the right, serving Andre Schembri on the other side who hit low from close range.

A long distance effort by Ilija Prodanovic three minutes from the end of the first half was partially saved by the Marsaxlokk goalkeeper and Charlo Magro turned the ball into a corner. Two minutes later, the locals had a good opportunity to double the score when Frendo managed to dribble the goalkeeper but his poor conclusion was blocked by Nikolic. Just before the end of the first half, Davor Landeka tried his luck with a shot from outside the area which was neutralised by Gauci.

Thirteen minutes in the second half, off a cross by Andre Schembri, Daniel Bogdanovic's header ended just wide and eight minutes later, Jamie Pace missed a good opportunity off a cross by Frendo from the right. Prodanovic then came to the rescue for Zrinjski on 73 minutes clearing into safety a cross by Wellman.

Marsaxlokk were reduced to ten men on 78 minutes when Cleavon Frendo was given marching orders for hitting an opponent and the visitors took full advantage, equalising four minutes later thanks to a rising shot by Sulejman Smijic.

Zrinjski could have even notched the winner one minute from time but Duric, served by Zizovic, had his fine effort turned into a corner by Reuben Gauci.

NK Zrinjski will now meet Maccabi Petach-Tikva of Israel in the second round of the competition, with the first leg being played in Israel on July 1/2 and the second leg being played on July 8/9.
