| After suffering a heavy defeat in Bucharest, Sliema Wanderers gave Rapid a hard time but still ended losing 0-1. Rapid therefore move on to the next round with a 6-0 aggregate score.
Sliema had four changes from the team which lost in Bucharest as Henry Bonello, Alex Muscat, Ivan Woods and Czech midfielder Zdenek Svoboda replaced Akanji, Di Lello, Lombardi and Said. Svoboda was making his debut for the Wanderers. The Wanderers had a good opportunity to take the lead on the 4th minute when off a cross from the right by Chucks Nwoko, Ivan Woods controlled but hestitated before trying to conclude allowing Constantin to anticipate him. Rapid took the lead on the 11th minute. Mugurel Buga, scorer of two goals in the first leg, received a perfect pass from the right and hit home from close range. On 32 minutes, Sliema had another good chance but Woods was anticipated once again by Constantin following another cross by Nwoko. Two minutes later, Svoboda tested the Romanian goalkeeper with a low shot which was neutralised by Coman. Lucian Burdujan was unlucky to hit the upright with a header off a cross by Buga from the right on 35 minutes. Henry Bonello then came to the rescue, performing a good save on Valentin Badoi who had advanced all alone and a few seconds later, the young Sliema keeper turned into a corner a fine shot by Buga. A curious incident occurred on the 37th minute when referee Milan Karadzic allowed a sort of 'time-out' to the players in order to quench their thirst as he and the two sets of players were clearly dehydrated due to the high temperature at the National Stadium. Play resumed and four minutes later, Buga served Karamyan inside the area but his conclusion was blocked by Carabott. Just before the break, Bonello neutralised another by Burdujan. The Blues held the initiative early in the second half. On 52 minutes, Carabott served Mattocks inside the area on the left but bis rising shot ended just wide. A minute later, Woods sent Nwoko through but the latter was anticipated by Coman. On the hour, a freekick by Svoboda ended just over the bar. With the temperature still quite hot, the referee awarded the players another 'time-out' fourteen minutes from time as the two teams were about to make another substitution. Finally three minutes from time, Stefan Giglio went close with a powerful drive from outside the area, off a Svoboda corner. | |
