Malta Football Awards

0  The 3rd Malta Football Awards - Winners and losers protagonists

The third edition of the Westin Malta Football Awards will be held next Saturday 31st July 2004. The Westin Dragonara Resort will once again host this event that will be held during a Gala Entertainment Evening. The event is also being screened live on Net TV.

The idea behind this event originated way back during the Summer of 2000 when Media.link sports journalist Sandro Micallef approached the MFA boss Dr. Joe Mifsud and made a proposal for organizing this event.

The main aim of the Malta Football Awards is to give personal recognition to players who might not have been in the limelight all throughout the previous season of the Premier Football League. When one looks at other top soccer European Countries such as the English Premier League, the Italian Serie A, the German Bundesliga etc. they all organize similar awards at the end of every season. The most common awards in these countries are the best team, best coach and best referee of the season. This year's edition of the Westin Malta Football Awards will once again include a new category being the Award for the best Female Footballer.

The following is the full list of the categories together with the results of last year's edition (2nd edition):

Best Maltese Player: Noel Turner (Sliema)
Best Foreign Player: Lucian Dronca (Birkirkara)
Best Striker: Michael Galea (Birkirkara)
Best Goalkeeper: Saviour Darmanin (Pietà)
Best Defender: Lucian Dronca (Birkirkara)
Best Midfielder: Noel Turner (Sliema)
Best Coach: Edward Aquilina (Sliema)
Best Referee: Charles Agius
Best Assistant Referee: Philip Agius
Most Promising Youngster: Roderick Bajada (Hamrun) Best Goal of the Season: Johann Zammit (M'Xlokk)

The first two editions of the Westin Malta Football Awards were a success and the feedback was extraordinary. It is the organizer's main aim this year to consolidate what they managed to produce in the first two editions and do better for the third edition coming up this July. During this year's edition a total number of 12 categories will be contested by various players / officials followed by the presentation of each individual award from well-known personalities.

The 12 categories for this year's edition are the following:
Best Maltese player 2003/04
Best Foreign player 2003/04
Most promising youngster 2003/04
Best goalkeeper 2003/04
Best striker 2003/04
Best defender 2003/04
Best midfielder 2003/04
Best coach 2003/04
Best referee 2003/04
Best assistant referee 2003/04
Best goal of the season 2003/04 and
Best female footballer

Who is entitled to vote?
The voting system for this 3rd edition will see the number of journalists voting increasing from 20 to 30 thus giving the opportunity to all journalists who reported the football games being also protagonists in these awards by expressing their preferences through their votes. In order to maximize the chances of winning to all protagonists, also invited to cast their votes in these respective 12 categories were 10 Premier League Club officials (the majority being the Presidents), 10 Premier League Coaches and 10 Premier team Captains.
Sliema, B'Kara, Hibs and M'Xlokk amongst the favorites
Having won the Premier League and the Trophy Sliema players who were protagonists in during the past season will definitely be amongst the favorites to win the most important awards. Other protagonists may also emerge from the Birkirkara and Hibernians squads who placed second and third respectively in the final standings. One must not underestimate the fact that there were other teams who managed to reach their targets namely Msida and Pietà. One must wait for the big night to see which team will win the majority or the most prestigious awards.
Limited number of tickets for the night
The event, which will be televised on Net TV will be hosted by John Busuttil, Antonella Vassallo and Valerie Vella. This trio will be anchoring the show, which will include entertainment by local singers Ira Losco, Ali & Lis together with the contribution of the Ace Line Dancers. Several Media, TV, and football personalities will be forming couples to present the actual awards during the big night. A limited number of tickets at Lm 5 each are available for the show; these can be purchased by calling the ticket hotline 9946 8001.
