BOV Division 1: Gudja stay top as Pembroke lose to neighbours Melita

BOV-First-DivisionA goal after just two minutes by Kane Micallef enabled Melita to beat Pembroke Athleta 1-0, therefore denying their former coach Jacques Scerri’s side to regain the top spot in the BOV First Division. Therefore Gudja United retain the leadership.

St. Andrew’s could have joined them on top but were held in a 2-2 draw by Fgura United. Matteo Desira Buttigieg put the Saints ahead on 27 minutes and just before half-time, Nicholas Bradshaw doubled the score. However five minutes in the second half, John Roland Emeka pulled one back and eight minutes later, Ryan Previ converted a penalty to level matters.

BOV-First-DivisionLija Athletic and Mqabba collected precious points in the BOV First Division as they defeated Zurrieq and Rabat Ajax respectively on Saturday.

Lija defeated Zurrieq 2-0 thanks to goals by Erjon Beu three minutes from the end of the first half and Dylan Mintoff on the 75th. Lija therefore returned to winning way after suffering three consecutive defeats while for Zurrieq, this was their fourth consecutive defeat.

In another match, Mqabba bounced back from a heavy defeat to Gzira with a 2-1 win over Rabat Ajax who conceded a second consecutive defeat after losing to bottom-placed Birzebbuga last week.

BOV-First-DivisionGudja United moved at the top of the BOV First Division table as they defeated Birzebbuga St. Peter’s 3-1 at the Centenary Stadium on Friday.

Mauro Brincat converted a penalty on the 8th minute to open the score and Udochukwu Nwoko doubled the score seven minutes from the end of the first half. Six minutes from time, Gary Caruana pulled one back for the Saints but Adrian Carabott sealed the issue with a third goal on the 89th.

BOV-First-DivisionGzira United registered a fourth consecutive win in the BOV First Division as they beat Mqabba 5-0 to join Vittoriosa Stars in fourth place on 22 points. Mqabba, on the other hand have now gone seven matches without a win.

Yanis Tonna put the Maroons ahead on 33 minutes and four minutes later, new recruit John Ogechukwu Nwoba doubled the score. One minute from half-time, Steve Meilak scored the third goal. Nwoba added another eleven minutes in the second half and four minutes from time, Moises Avila Perez converted a penalty to seal the issue.

BOV-First-DivisionBirzebbuga St. Peter’s registered their first win in the BOV First Division as a goal by Keith Muscat on the 31st minute enabled them to beat Rabat Ajax 1-0.

Although they still lie at the bottom of the table, Birzebbuga move to just four points behind Zurrieq who are second from bottom. Rabat, on the other hand, are still tenth.

Meanwhile Gudja United kept the pace with leaders Pembroke Athleta as they defeated Lija Athletic 2-0 thanks to goals by Ryan Cauchi and Angelo Catania. Gudja therefore re-join St. Andrews on 22 points.
