After winning the Euro Challenge Cup last month, Hibernians claimed the second honour of season as they defeated BOV Premier League champions Marsaxlokk 3-1 in the BOV Super Cup. Hibs win the Super Cup for the second time in the history of the club.

The Paolites scored twice in the first nine minutes and from then onwards, they held the initiative. They increased the lead further late in the game before the Southseasiders pulled one back.

Although Marsaxlokk had Gareth Sciberras, Malcolm Licari and Trevor Templeman on the bench, Brian Talbot could not count on them as they were not fully fit just like Gareth Sciberras. However they had two players making their debut - Renato Conceicao and William Camenzuli. Hibernians on the other hand, lacked Jonathan Caruana and Jonathan Pearson.

Hibs could not have a better start. On the 6th minute, a freekick by Andrew Cohen was well-met by Julio Alcorse who managed to beat Reuben Gauci from inside the goal area. Three minutes later, Hibs doubled the score with a well-taken freekick by Andrew Cohen with the ball ending in the top right corner behind Gauci.

Marsaxlokk replied with a cross from the left for Jamie Pace who served Stephen Wellman but the Malta international defender hit high on the 20th. Two minutes later, another assist by Jamie Pace for Stephen Wellman whose effort was deflected into a corner by Mario Muscat.

Following a good run on the right, Terence Scerri had a powerful shot saved in two attempts on 35 minutes.

The two teams shared the exchanges on the restart with Hibernians however going close on 65 minutes as Cohen sent Doffo through. The Argentine midfielder advanced upfield pulled to the left and tried his luck with a low shot which was blocked by a defender.

Cleavon Frendo had a powerful shot from inside the area for Marsaxlokk ending just over the bar on 67 minutes and eight minutes later, Hibs replied with a good attempt by Clayton Failla whose shot from the left missing the target by a whisker.

Hibernians sealed the issue with a third goal eleven minutes from time. Julio Alcorse served Edmond Agius from the right and the Under-21 midfielder scored a great goal with a rising shot which gave substitute goalkeeper Reuben Debono no chance.

The Southseasiders' reaction consisted of a low Kevin Sammut effort which was neutralised by Mario Muscat.

Marsaxlokk scored a consolation goal two minutes from time with a powerful shot by Stephen Wellman from the right which beat goalkeeper Mario Muscat.
