Mqabba reached the next round of the U*BET FA Trophy after beating Vittoriosa Stars by the odd goal in five.

Joey Falzon's side seemed heading towards a comfortable win after taking a comfortable three-goal lead but the Stars had other ideas and created several chances after the break. However hey could not go beyond scoring two goals, just to reduce the gap.

Mqabba lacked foreigners Italo Nogueira and Fabio Silva and rested goalkeeper Kris Calleja and Clifford Gatt Baldacchino.

Mqabba took the lead on the 8th minute when off a through pass by John Paul Muscat, Marcelo Pereira concluded a solo effort with a low shot from the right which beat goalkeeper Ivan Cassar.

The Stars replied with cross by Ivan Zammit from which Robert Adami headed into the direction of Johan Spiteri who hit high.

But on the 18th minute, Mqabba doubled the score with Dylan Zarb concluding a good run on the right flank with an angled shot which beat goalkeeper Ivan Cassar.

Mqabba goalie Paul Psaila managed to turn into a corner a powerful shot by Larry Lagana from the left when served by Ivan Zammit on 27 minutes. Three minutes later, off another cross by Zammit, a header by Johan Spiteri was partially saved by Psaila and Robert Adami's effort, off the rebound, was also blocked by the Mqabba custodian. One minute from the end of the first half, Claudio Calleja tried his luck with a shot from outside the area which was however neutralised by the Vittoriosa goalkeeper.

Marcelo Pereira made it 3-0 two minutes in the second half, hitting home past Ivan Cassar when served by Marlon Briffa from the right following a good run by the latter.

Substitute Trevor Thomas had a good opportunity to reduce the gap on 56 minutes but concluded high from the edge of the area.

Vittoriosa pulled one back on 62 minutes when they had a freekick which hit the upright with Psaila beaten but the ball reached Leighton Grech who placed the ball of the net from close range.

Leighton Grech went close once again on 70 minutes with a diagonal shot when served by Lagana. Three minutes later, a shot by Trevor Thomas was saved in two attempts by the Mqabba goalie.

Twelve minutes from time, Vittoriosa were awarded a penalty for a hands by Marlon Briffa inside the area. From the penalty spot, Trevor Thomas made not mistake.

Mqabba could have restored a two-goal lead one minute from time but Marlon Briffa's effort from the edge of the area ended high when served by Pereira from the right.

In stoppage time, the Stars almost notched a dramatic equaliser when off a corner from the right, Ivan Zammit's header was cleared off the goal line by a defender.

With a goal in each half, Hamrun Spartans managed to beat BOV First Division leaders Mosta to reach the next round of the U*BET FA Trophy.

The Spartans were in full strength with no players injured or suspended. On the other hand, the First Division leaders lacked Daniel Theuma, Elton Vella and Gilbert Martin.

The first half lacked goal-mouth action with play concentrated in midfield. Although Hamrun had an edge over Mosta, the Blues controlled their opponents well and goalkeeper Claude Carbonaro was hardly tested.

Hamrun took the lead on 36 minutes with a diagonal shot by Alfred Effiong when served by Ryan Fenech on the right.

Three minutes in added time, a Ryan Fenech effort was neutralised by Carbonaro.

Five minutes in the second half, Effiong released Stephen Meilak but the latter's effort, after dribbling the goalkeeper, was cleared off the goal-line by Antonio Saliba. On 53 minutes, Roderick Fenech, served by Ryan Fenech, headed over the bar. On the other side of the pitch, Michael Falzon saved a header by Carlos Camenzuli, served by Steve Borg, on 61 minutes.

However the Spartans doubled the score on 64 minutes when off a cross by Rupert Mangion, Gaetan Spiteri slammed the ball home past Carbonaro.

Finally five minutes from time, Mosta had a good chance of reducing the gap but substitute Ryan Deguara's powerful shot from the right ended wide.
