| Birkirkara and Valletta shared the spoils in an entertaining 1-1 draw in the first match from the Euro Challenge Cup - the curtain raiser for season 2008/09.
The Citizens were a better side throughout the ninety minutes, creating the better chances. Against the run of play, the Stripes took the lead but Valletta levelled matters early in the second half. Making their debut for Valletta were Luke Dimech, Cleavon Frendo and Jamie Pace with the other new recruit Edmond Agius starting the game on the bench and being included as a substitute. Valletta created the first scoring opportunities, going close on the 3rd minute with a Luke Dimech effort from outside the area which was neutralised by Omar Borg. Ten minutes later, following a good pass by Dyson Falzon from the left, Ian Zammit had a powerful shot deflected into a corner. Birkirkara managed to take the lead on the 18th minute thanks to a great freekick by Alan Tabone which beat goalkeeper Andrew Hogg. The Citizens replied with a cross by Dyson Falzon from the left with Ian Zammit's header being turned into a corner by Omar Borg. Just before half-time, Falzon released Steve Bezzina inside the area but as the latter was about to conclude into the empty net, Thomas Paris blocked his attempt into safety. Valletta levelled matters twelve minutes in the second half when Cleavon Frendo served Ian Zammit who unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of area to beat Omar Borg. On 62 minutes, a shot by Ian Zammit from the right was not held by the Birkirkara custodian with Cleavon Frendo placing the ball at the back of the net but the goal was disallowed for an offside. The Citizens went close once again on 76 minutes blocking a Cleavon Frendo effort from close range. The former Marsaxlokk striker had to leave the pitch injured. On 83 minutes, Shaun Bajada released Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza on the left but the latter's effort hit the foot of the upright. A minute later, Alan Tabone sent Mifsud Triganza through on the right but Andrew Hogg rushed out of the area to block into safety. | |
