A goal by Shaun Bajada gave Birkirkara a narrow win over Marsaxlokk in the second match from the Euro Challenge Cup.

At this point, Birkirkara hope that Valletta fail to beat Marsaxlokk in order to claim the first honour of the season. Valletta, on the other hand, must win, scoring two goals or more in order to make sure of winning the cup.

John Buttigieg's side were a better team during the first half. They managed to break the deadlock early in the second half but Marsaxlokk soon improved going close to equalising on several occasions.

Birkirkara had a number of changes from the team which drew with Valletta with Bernard Paris, Patrick Borg, Shaun Bajada, Michael Galea and debutante Angus Buhagiar all included in the starting line-up. Marsaxlokk, on the other hand, had Saviour Darmanin and Marcelo Pereira making their debut after they joined the club

The Stripes had the first shot at goal when off a cross from the right by Angus Buhagiar, Michael Galea hit high.

On 14 minutes, Shaun Bajada had a fine freekick deflected into a corner. Five minutes later the same player tested Darmanin with a long-distance freekick. On the other side of the pitch on 28 minutes, Alcorse headed the ball down for Gareth Sciberras on the right but the latter's attempt was blocked by Paris.

Birkirkara took the lead seven minutes in the second half when a Angus Buhagiar effort was partially saved by Darmanin and off the rebound, Shaun Bajada slotted past the Marsaxlokk custodian.

Five minutes later, Bajada missed a good chance to double the score, hitting high when served by Lee Lombardi from the right.

Marsaxlokk replied with a cross by Kevin Sammut from the right with Julio Alcorse testing Bernard Paris with a low shot from close range on 65 minutes. Two minutes later, Christian Cassar released Alcorse on the right but the latter hit high.

The Southseasiders were now in the driving seat, going close once again with a header by Mark Barbara, off a Kevin Sammut cross from the right, which was neutralised by Paris aided by the crossbar. A freekick by William Camenzuli was saved in two attempts by the Birkirkara custodian fifteen minutes from time. However the Stripes managed to keep the situation under control to take home the three points.
