Birkirkara won the first honour of the season - the Euro Challenge Cup after Valletta were held in a 2-2 draw by Marsaxlokk. The Stripes end their commitments on four points, followed by Valletta on two and Marsaxlokk one.

This was the third success for the Stripes in this competition after winning the Lowenbrau Cup twice.

The Southseasiders had three changes from the team which lost to Birkirkara as Arnold Buttigieg, Clive Brincat and Christian Cassar replaced Malcolm Licari, Renato Conceicao and Steve Wellman. Valletta, on the other hand, had their latest signing Njongo Priso starting the game on the bench.

The Citizens had the first attempt at goal with Dyson Falzon heading high off a Steve Bezzina cross from the left on the 3rd minute. Eight minutes later, a freekick by Stefan Giglio was blocked by a defender and off the rebound, the same player's volley was tipped into a corner by Saviour Darmanin.

Valletta took the lead on 13 minutes when off a cross by Dyson Falzon from the left, Darmanin could only deflect the ball slightly and Ian Zammit slammed the ball home.

On 22 minutes, the Citizens could have doubled the score but Dyson Falzon brought the best out of the Valletta goalkeeper with a fine shot from outside the area. A minute later, Gilbert Agius released Dyson Falzon who all alone in front of the goalkeeper, rounded Darmanin but hit wide.

Valletta were reduced to ten men on 31 minutes as Luke Dimech was given marching orders by referee Adrian Casha following an argument between the Citizens' defender and Julio Alcorse.

One minute in stoppage time, Marsaxlokk levelled matters when Christian Cassar served Julio Alcorse on the right and the latter made no mistake with a fine shot which beat Andrew Hogg.

Two minutes in the second half, Valletta regained the lead. Gilbert Agius received a pass from the left and with a fine shot from outside the area, he placed the ball in the bottom right corner behind goalkeeper Darmanin.

The Southseasiders' reaction was immediate and Marcelo Pereira received a through-pass on the right but his conclusion ended just wide. A freekick by Christian Cassar from the left was neutralised by Hogg on 52 minutes.

On the hour, following a great move by Gilbert Agius, he crossed for Ian Zammit whose fine header beat Darmanin. However Clive Brincat came to the rescue clearing the ball into safety. Gilbert Agius then had two long-range shots parried by the Marsaxlokk custodian.

Gilbert Agius exchanged the ball with Steve Bezzina on the left before serving substitute Cleavon Frendo on the other side of the pitch on 74 minutes. However Frendo's effort was deflected into a corner. On the other side of the pitch, Andrew Hogg managed to block a close-range effort by Alcorse.

Two minutes from time, Marsaxlokk equalised when off a cross by Christian Cassar from the left, Marcelo Pereira slotted the ball past Hogg.
