Malta will be taking part in the second edition of the International Challenge Trophy – a competition reserved for players under the age of twenty-three.
Taking part in the competition are eleven teams which were divided into three groups. Malta was drawn in Group A together with Italy, Belgium and Romania. England, Republic of Ireland and Estonia will play in Group B while Portugal, Poland, Wales and Northern Ireland were drawn in Group C. Group matches are played either home or away. 
The Malta Football Association plans to use this team to give players who are no longer eligible to play for the Under-21 side but who are yet to make it to the senior squad an opportunity to play international football. 
Malta will be playing Italy in the first match on December 2 at home. The second game is against Belgium on March 31, 2010, away from home while the third and final match is against Romania on April 24 at home. 
Eight teams took part in the first edition of the International Challenge Trophy, namely England, Finland, Italy, Wales, Belgium, Republic of Ireland, Slovakia and Northern Ireland. Belgium won the final, defeating England 1-0 last May.
