100th Anniversary of the National League: a commemorative publication

The publication issued recently by the MFA Media Department ‘100th Anniversary of the National League’ to mark 100 years since the Maltese association started organising the National League and the 50th anniversary of the MFA’s full membership with FIFA and UEFA has been well received by football lovers.

This commemorative publication, compiled and edited by former football journalist Albert Fenech, with an introduction by MFA President Dr Joe Mifsud, contains a panorama of the history of the national league competition which was first organised in season 1909-1910. This insight is comprehensively backed by the editor through a detailed account of the development of the league contests from one decade to the other.

Flashbacks through vintage illustrations of players, teams and venues of league matches throughout the years, most of which courtesy of Dr Ronald Cuschieri, are complemented by interesting features and statistical information covering the 94 top league championships and other competitions contested up to last season.

Focus on the nine local teams, apart from the KOMR, which have so far won the title of Malta Champions, through interviews given by players representing these teams, features on well-known football families and the top fifty Maltese performers, as well as episodes of sporting rivalry which grew since the first years, add to the interesting flavour of a publication which has a fine lay-out by Ikona Artworks, in line with modern standards.

MFA Assistant General Secretary (Administration), Louis Micallef, and the Association’s Press Officer, Alex Vella, were among the several contributors of this publication.

The book, priced at 10 Euro, is a must for all football followers, particularly those with a special eye for the history of football in Malta and collectors of similar publications.
