100 Anniversary Cup: Another six teams seek place in semi-finals

Six teams will be fighting for a place in the semi-finals of the National League 100 Anniversary Cup on Wednesday. Two matches will be played at the Hibernians Stadium and another is scheduled at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

In the first match at the Hibernians Stadium, Tarxien Rainbows take on Second Division side Lija Athletic.

The Rainbows’ morale is sky-high after securing a place in the Championship Pool following a narrow win over neighbours Hibernians in the derby. Lija, on the other hand, are currently leading the table in Division 2 with 28 points from twelve matches.

Tarxien registered two easy wins to reach this stage, beating Msida St. Joseph 5-0 and Balzan Youths 5-1. On the other hand, Lija entered the competition in the second round, beating Gzira United 2-1, Birzebbuga St. Peter’s 1-0 and Third Division side Naxxar Lions 3-1.

Sliema Wanderers face First Division side Mosta in the second match at the Hibernians Stadium.

Following the appointment of Mark Marlow as new coach, three wins in their last three games have put the Wanderers back on track. They are now fourth and could possibly start the second phase just four points behind the leaders. Mosta, on the other hand, are currently fifth in Division 1 with eleven points from nine matches.

In the third and fourth round, Sliema defeated First Division sides San ?wann and St. Patrick 2-0 and 4-1 respectively. Mosta made it to the quarter-finals after beating Siggiewi 3-1 and Gharghur 4-1.

At the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Hamrun Spartans host Floriana in a clash between two teams who failed to make it to the Championship Pool. Both sides will be tyring to make up for this disappointment by qualifying for the semi-finals of the competition.

The Spartans made it to the quarter-finals after beating St. George’s 3-0 and Mellie?a 4-1. Floriana, on the other hand, defeated Mqabba 2-0 and Melita 1-0.
