Former club vice-president handed 18-month jail term

Former Vittoriosa Stars vice-president Manuel Ancilleri was handed an 18-month jail term suspended for three years and fined €2,000 after being found guilty of trying to bribe two players of St. George’s FC before a BOV First Division match between Vittoriosa and St. George’s on December 27th, 2008.

In January 2009, the two St. George’s players – Lawrence Mizzi and Andrea Gatt – admitted to bribery charges and were both given a suspended jail sentence and fined €500 each.

In August, the MFA Board to Investigate Corrupt Practices relegated Vittoriosa Stars to Division 1 with immediate effect after the club had secured promotion to the Premier League at the end of the season.

Ancilleri is expected to appeal from the sentence.
