Women's Football: Top-of-the-table clash on Tuesday

Women’s Super Cup winners Mosta take on champions Birkirkara in a top-of-the-table clash from the Women’s First Division League on Tuesday at the Luxol Ground, kick-off at 20:30. The two teams are currently joint-leaders with 31 points, ten ahead of Hibernians, and with a win, either side could move an important step towards securing the 2009/10 championship.

This clash puts against each other the best forward line – Birkirkara who scored 49 goals – against the best rear-guard – Mosta who suffered just five. Both sides won ten out of the twelve matches played, dropping their only points in a draw and a defeat.

Birkirkara, winners of the three honours at stake last season – the Women’s First Division championship, the Women’s Knock-Out competition and the Women’s Super Cup, were held in a 1-1 draw by Hibernians in November and then lost 0-3 to Mosta in January.

Mosta, on the other hand, lost 0-1 to Birkirkara in November and were then held in a 1-1 draw by Hibernians last month. The Blues won the first honour of the season in September when they had defeated Birkirkara 2-1 in the Women’s Super Cup.

Hibernians – winners of the championship nine times, lie in third place on 21 points, followed by newly-promoted Gozo on 16. Sliema Raiders are fifth on seven points while Melita lie at the bottom of the table with just one point.

Meanwhile in Division 2, Mgarr United are favourites to claim the title after claiming 25 points from nine matches. They are the only unbeaten side, dropping their only points in a goalless draw with Pembroke Athleta.

St. Venera Yellow Blues are second on 18 points, followed by Pembroke Athleta and Marsa on 16. Both Pembroke and Marsa have a game in hand. Hamrun Spartans lie in fifth place on 8 points, followed by Kirkop United on six points, Tarxien Rainbows and Lija/Iklin on four.
