Women's Football: Birkirkara move three points clear

Champions Birkirkara moved a step closer to securing the third Women’s First Division League title after defeating Mosta 2-1 in a top-of-the-table clash on Tuesday. Before the game, the two teams were sharing the top spot on 31 points.

With two games to go, Birkirkara lead the way three points ahead of the Blues. The Stripes take on Gozo and Melita in the last two matches while Mosta face Sliema Raiders and Hibernians.

It was Kim Parnis who put Birkirkara ahead on the 9th minute. Oriana Bedingfiled levelled matters on 24 minutes but three minutes later, Kelly Agius Pace restored the lead for the Stripes.

Hibernians – winners of the championship nine times, lie in third place on 24 points, following a 7-1 win over Sliema Raiders, followed by newly-promoted Gozo in fourth-place on 16. Sliema Raiders are fifth on seven points while Melita lie at the bottom of the table with just one point.

Meanwhile in Division 2, Mgarr United are favourites to claim the title after claiming 25 points from nine matches. They are the only unbeaten side, dropping their only points in a goalless draw with Pembroke Athleta.

Pembroke Athleta are second on 19 points, followed by St. Venera Yellow Blues on 18 points and Marsa on 16. Marsa, however, have a game in hand. Hamrun Spartans lie in fifth place on 11 points, followed by Kirkop United on six points, Tarxien Rainbows and Lija/Iklin on four.
