Gilbert Agius expected to make the 400th league appearance

Valletta captain Gilbert Agius is expected to make a milestone 400th League appearance in the City shirt as the Citizens take on Sliema Wanderers on Friday.

Gilbert made his League debut as a 16 year old against Sliema Wanderers on the 2nd September 1990 when the then City Coach Mr. George Busuttil introduced him as a substitute. Ever since then, Gilbert’s name has been indelibly linked with the City and apart from a brief spell with AC Pisa, he has never seen himself playing for any other club. It is almost too difficult for him to even contemplate.

Times may have changed but Gilbert Agius certainly hasn’t and tomorrow he will join the 400 club-there can be no more fitting Tribute than to say he undoubtedly belongs there.

With Valletta, Gilbert Agius played 556 matches in all, scoring 236. These include 339 games and 176 goals in league matches and 33 matches and ten goals in European competitions.

He managed to win six League Championships, six F.A Trophies, seven Super Cups, six Lowenbrau Cups, four Super 5 Cups, the Air Malta Centenary Cup, the National League 100 Anniversary Cup and the Bet Fair Cup.

On a personal level, he was voted Footballer of the Year three times – in 1996/97, 2000/01 and 2006/07. He is the only player to win this award three times.

Gilbert Agius, who was voted Player of the Month twelve times throughout his career, was top scorer in season 1998/99 with 20 goals.

Other personal awards include 1991/92 Best Under-18 Player; 1996/7 Runner-Up Sportsman of the Year; 2004/5 Powerade Player of the year; 2006/07 Best Goal Of The Year; 2007/08 Malta Football Awards Best Maltese Player and Best Goal Of The Year and 2008/09 Malta Football Awards Best Veteran Player.

After making his international debut on November 7,1993, Agius played 119 matches for the national team, scoring eight goals.
