Birkirkara FC: Jorge Mora in, Michael Galea out

Spanish goalkeeper Jorge Febles Mora will be guarding the posts for Birkirkara FC this season after agreeing a deal with the Stripes, one year after being released by the club. At the same time, Birkirkara announced that Michael Galea will be leaving the club after deciding not to renew his contract with the club. The news was announced by the club’s website www.birkirkarafc.com

Jorge Mora is surely not a new name in Maltese football as two season ago, when Birkirkara were crowned champions for their third time, Jorge was defending our posts. The Spanish goalkeeper’s skills were extremely important to win this honour. Without any doubt, he remained in the memory of thousands of Birkirkara supporters. In the Premier League he made 26 appearances and he managed to register 9 clean sheets.

On the other hand, Michael Galea decided to no longer play for Birkirkara FC after opting not to renew his contract with the Club.

Speaking to the club’s official website www.birkirkarafc.com, Galea said “It was not an easy decision but I would like to thank the Birkirkara FC committee for their help in understanding the situation and acceding to my request. The past 14 years at the club have been wonderful for me and I am proud to have contributed to many of the success that Birkirkara have enjoyed throughout these years. I wish the club the very best for the future and assure everyone that I will remain a Birkirkara supporter in the years to come.”

Michael Galea made 334 appearances in his career and he managed to score no less than 177 goals. He is the third best scorer ever in Maltese football, after Stefan Sultana and Gilbert Agius. However Galea holds a better average number of goals when considering the fact that he played much less than the other two scorers.

Without any doubt, all Maltese supporters will remember Michael Galea not only for the large amounts of goals he scored but also for the great loyalty and respect he showed towards Birkirkara FC.

With the Stripes, Galea won all the major honours including three league championships, five FA Trophies and ended as Premier League top scorer in 2005/06.

Birkirkara, who have appointed Patrick Curmi as their new coach, secured the services of Leighton Grech on Friday.
