U*BET FA Trophy gets underway

The U*BET FA Trophy 2011/12 kicked-off on Thursday with the first four matches from the first round of the competition. A first round open for clubs from the BOV Third Division and the Gozo Football Association.

At the Gozo Stadium, Gozitan side Xewkija Tigers beat Swieqi United 5-0, therefore setting up a second round clash with Mdina Knights who beat Gharb Rangers 8-1 in another match.

John Camilleri was the hero for Xewkija as he scored four of the goals – on 35, 50, 52 and 70 minutes. Chris Camilleri scored the other two minutes from time.

In the second match, Mdina scored seven goals in the first half thanks to Robert Southward (7 and 9 minutes), Peter Grima (13), Andrea Spiteri (19), Mark Saliba (37 and 41) and Nicholas Micallef (40). After the break, Philip Bajada pulled one back for the Rangers on 58 minutes before Mark Saliba scored the eighth goal on 65 minutes.

Mgarr United defeated Oratory Youths 4-2 after extra-time. At the end of the ninety minutes, the score was 1-1. In the second round, they will be Zejtun Corinthians.

In another match, Mtarfa defeated Xghajra Tornados 1-0 in a clash between two Third Division sides. Larkin Vella scored the all-important goal for Mtarfa. They will be meeting St. Georges in the next stage.
