New assistant referee on FIFA panel

Assistant Referee Mitchell Scerri was named for the first time as International Assistant Referee as the officials on the FIFA International Lists for 2012 were revealed on Tuesday during the annual presentation of the FIFA badges to Maltese FIFA Referees and Assistant Referees which was held at the Le Meridien Hotel and Spa, St. Julian’s.

He replaces Joseph Camilleri who retires from the international scene due to the FIFA age limit.

The Malta Football Association is represented by four referees and eight assistant referees on the Men’s Referees List – referees Marco Borg, Chris Lautier, Clayton Pisani and Alan Mario Sant and assistant referees Konrad Borg, Alan Camilleri, William Debattista, Mariano Debono, Chris Francalanza, Mitchell Scerri, Edward Spiteri and Ingmar Spiteri.

Also representing Malta on the FIFA list are one referee on the Women’s Referees List – Esther Azzopardi and one referee on the Men’s Futsal Referees List – Franco Cachia.

For the first time, Malta will have two referees on the Beach Soccer Referees’ list, namely Stefan Pace and Jude Amin Utulu.

The badges were presented by MFA CEO Bjorn Vassallo. Joe Camilleri was presented with a memento after serving on the FIFA panel for the past nine years.
