Obiefule notches hat-trick as Mosta secure Premier League status

Mosta secured their Premier League status for the first time in the history of the club as they defeated a depleted Qormi side 4-1.

The hero for the Blues was once again Nigerian striker Obinna Obiefule who notched a hat-trick to establish a new Premier League record of 34 goals. Sliema Wanderers coach Danilo Doncic held the previous record of 32 goals.

Obinna Obiefule put Mosta ahead on the 16th minute as he beat Matthew Farrugia off a cross by Ian Zammit from the right.

Obiefule doubled the score on 24 minutes, placing the ball at the back of the net off a cross by Kane Farrugia.

Mosta scored the third goal eight minutes from the end of the first half when off a Dyson Falzon freekick, Obinna Obiefule addressed the ball in the direction of Florent Raimy who headed the ball home past Farrugia.

The Blues scored the fourth goal on 70 minutes when off a cross by Dyson Falzon, the ball was blocked by a defender and Obinna Obiefule hit home.

Two minutes later, Joseph Chetcuti pulled one back for Qormi with a low shot from the left which beat goalkeeper Jonathan Debono.

Obinna Obiefule was voted BOV Player of the Match.

Mqabba defeated Hamrun Spartans 4-1 but the three points were not enough to avoid a quick return to the First Division.

They went out in search of an early goal and a Bojan Mamic effort was blocked by Cassar on the 6th minute. Hamrun replied with attempts by Gianluca Calabretta which was parried by Franklin Azzopardi a minute later.

The Reds took the lead on the 16th minute thanks to a well-executed freeick by Bojan Mamic.

On the 25th, Andrea Cassar stopped Mazzitelli from concluding after the latter darted inside the area and a minute later, the Hamrun custodian neutralised a Claudio Calleja effort.

Mqabba doubled the score on 31 minutes when off a through pass, Bojan Mamic advanced into the area, shadowed by a defender, but still managed to beat Cassar with a powerful shot.

Hamrun pulled one back on 45 minutes when Steve Bonnici was floored inside the area. From the penalty spot, David Camilleri converted.

The Spartans went close to equalising with attempts by David Camilleri and Matthew Gauci. An Anderson Mendes Ribeiro effort was then neutralised by Franklin Azzopardi.

On 78 minutes, a Kevin Sammut effort from outside the area hit the upright.

Marko Potezica sealed the issue with a fourth goal one minute from time.

Birkirkara finished third as they beat Balzan Youths while Floriana lost to Sliema Wanderers in two matches from the Championship Pool.

At the National Stadium, Sliema Wanderers ended the season on a positive note as they registered their first win in the Championship Pool, defeating Floriana 4-1.

The Wanderers forged ahead on the 3rd minute when Emiliano Lattes received a through pass and with a low shot from inside the area, he beat goalkeeper Patrick Jansen.

Lattes went close to doubling the score two minutes later but another shot from inside the area ended just wide. On the other side of the pitch, a Ryan Darmanin effort from the left was cleared off the goal line by Josef Mifsud.

Floriana levelled matters on 34 minutes thanks to Ryan Darmanin who entered the penalty area and hit low past Henry Bonello.

However Sliema regained the lead five minutes from the end of the first half when Danial Mitev’s powerful shot from the edge of the area was not held by Jansen with the ball ending at the back of the net.

Three minutes in the second half, Danial Mitev added another goal for Sliema with a fine shot from just inside the area.

Alex Muscat made it 4-1 with a diagonal shot from the right on 56 minutes.

In stoppage time, Ryan Darmanin was unlucky to hit the upright from close range.

Ten minutes later, Shodiya released Jorge Santos Silva and the latter placed the ball at the back of the net with a low shot from inside the area.

Birkirkara scored the third goal on 66 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after a defender handled the ball inside the area. From the penalty spot, Harun Shola Shodiya made no mistake.
