Andre Schembri signs two-year deal with Omonia Nicosia

AC Omonia will be Andre Schembri’s new club for the next two years in the heart of Cyprus as he signed a new deal on Monday after successfully completing a medical test in Nicosia.

After turning down a number of club offers in Europe, especially from Greece where Schembri played last season, AC Omonia offered a two-year deal to the Maltese International. Schembri put pen to paper on Monday morning and was officially presented to the media in Cyprus. The interest in the player started during his stay in Greece while he played for Panionios.

Andre Schembri explained that this was one of the busiest summers in his career dealing with many offers and finally deciding to choose this prestigious club from the Cypriot First Division.

“I had to choose wisely, I had no hurry but pressure sometimes did not help,” Schembri said. After signing his new contract, Schembri was delighted and looking forward to his first training session with his new teammates.

This is Schembri’s sixth foreign club in his international career after playing with Eintracht Braunshweig and Carl Zeis Jena (Germany), Austria Karnten (Austria), Ferencvaros (Hungary), Olympiakos Volos (Greece) and Panionios (Greece).

For the past sixty years AC Omonia played in the First Division winning 20 League Championships, 14 Cypriot Cups and 16 Super Cups.

The club is one of the main clubs in Nicosia and their main rivals are APOEL Nicosia. The club placed third last season and hence played in the UEFA Europa League qualifiers. They were eliminated by Red Star Belgrade of Serbia on penalties in the third qualifying round.

The Cypriot First Division kicks off on Saturday 1st September and Schembri will make his first appearance with AC Omonia on Sunday 2nd September against Ayia Napa FC.
