Hibernians were fined €5,000 after fans threw two plastic bottles onto the field of play during the UEFA Europa League first qualifying round second leg against FK Sarejevo.

This was not the first time a local club was hit hard by UEFA. Birkirkara were fined €15,000 in 2011 after some of their fans directed racial abuse at a player of KS Vllaznia of Albania during another UEFA Europa League qualifier.

Valletta are also expected to be charged for an incident occurring during the first leg of the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round against FK Partizan.

Meanwhile during a meeting of the Council of the Malta Football Association which was held on Tuesday, MFA president Norman Darmanin Demajo announced that money derived from UEFA solidarity payments earmarked for youth development which should had gone to clubs between season 2002/03 and 2006/07 amounting to around €74,000 will be distributed to the clubs it was due.

The MFA, together with all other member associations, started receiving payments from UEFA which had to be distributed to clubs. However the MFA President said that although this was done in 2001/02, as from the following season and for five consecutive years, the sum was not given to clubs in its totality.

Darmanin Demajo said that only in the last two years of the previous MFA administration that the complete sum was given to clubs. He said that in December 2008, he had written to the MFA General Secretary highlighting what he considered to be misappropriation of funds.

The MFA president announced that the association will be working on how to distribute the money due to the clubs concerned.
