Late Bueno goal hands Rainbows first win — Comfortable win for Mosta

Tarxien Rainbows registered their first win as they came from behind to beat Balzan 2-1.

For Balzan, this was the third successive defeat, leaving them at the bottom of the table together with Rabat Ajax and Melita on one point.

The Rainbows lacked Luis Romulo de Castro but Danilo Meira Santos was back after missing the last game against Hamrun. Balzan, on the other hand, had Renato Conceicao back after serving a two-match ban while Christian Caruana was named in the starting line-up for the first time.

Balzan managed to take the lead on 13 minutes when Pedro dos Santos Calcado beat goalkeeper David Cassar with a direct freekick from the right.

Tarxien replied with an Evaldo header from the right off a Carlo Mamo freekick on the 18th minute but Matthew Camilleri performed a good save. Three minutes later, Evaldo headed the ball just over the bar off a freekick by Andrezinho. A Danilo Meira Santos effort was turned into a corner on 26 minutes.

Tarxien equalised on 37 minutes thanks to a direct freekick by Evaldo Silva dos Santos which gave goalkeeper Matthew Camilleri no chance.

Four minutes later, Evaldo tried his luck with another direct freekick but this time, the Balzan custodian turned the ball into a corner.

Following a freekick by Andrezinho, a Danilo effort was partially saved by Camilleri with Karl Pulo hitting high off the rebound on 59 minutes. Two minutes later, a freekick by Calcado from the left was tipped into a corner by David Cassar aided by the crossbar. From the resulting corner, the Tarxien goalkeeper managed to block a fine header by Christian Caruana. On the other side of the pitch, a Danilo effort was blocked by Camilleri on 69 minutes.

Renato Conceicao was unlucky to hit the woodwork on 82 minutes for Balzan with a shot from outside the area. On the 90th, David Fenech went for the Rainbows with a fine rising shot but Camilleri palmed out the ball.

But it was not over yet as on the 90th minute, Danilo received a through pass on the right, rounded the goalkeeper and served Daniel Mariano Bueno who hit home from close range.

Pedro dos Santos Calcado was voted BOV Player of the Match.

Mosta registered their second successive win as they found no difficulty in beating Hamrun Spartans 4-1. The Blues join Qormi with two wins from four matches, six behind the three joint-leaders.

For the Spartans, this was the first defeat after three draws in the first three matches.

The Spartans lacked goalkeeper Andrea Cassar and Roderick Fenech while Alex Cini and Ryan Grech were missing for Mosta. Former Mosta defender Adrian Borg was making his debut for the Spartans.

Hardly thirty seconds had passed that Daniel Zerafa released Terence Vella on the right and the latter’s diagonal shot hit the foot of the post.

Mosta replied with a Daniel Bogdanovic freekick which was turned into a corner by Anthony Curmi on the 8th minute. From the resulting corner by Danail Mitev, Carlos Campagnoli headed home to put the Blues ahead.

The Blues doubled the score on 36 minutes thanks to a great freekick by Danail Mitev which gave goalkeeper Anthony Curmi no chance.

Six minutes later, Danail Mitev made it 3-0 for Mosta concluding a solo effort with a powerful shot from the left which beat Curmi.

Justin Haber anticipated Ryan Spiteri following a pass by Nikolay Bozhov on 54 minutes and three minutes later, neutralised a Massimo Grima direct freekick.

Five minutes later, Mosta scored the fourth goal thanks to Firas Aboulezz who beat Curmi following a Jonathan Bajada freekick from the right.

The Spartans pulled one back on 71 minutes thanks to Nikolay Bozhov, served by Terence Vella on the left, whose shot on the turn beat Justin Haber.

Anthony Curmi performed a good save on a close range effort by Obinna Obiefule on 74 minutes and a few seconds later, Bozhov tried his luck with a lob from midfield but the ball ended just over the bar.

Danail Mitev was voted BOV Player of the Match.
