BOV Women's Division 1: Thirty-one goals in four matches

Thirty-one goals were scored in the four matches in the BOV Women’s First Division with Mosta, Birkirkara, Hibernians and Gozo registering comfortable wins.

Leaders Mosta defeated Hamrun Spartans 8-0 at the Mgarr Ground to stay three points ahead of Birkirkara and Hibernians.

The Blues managed to break the deadlock on the 15th minute through Nicole Buttigieg. Two minutes later, Jade Flask doubled the score and five minutes from time, the same player scored the third goal. Just before half-time, Dorianne Theuma made it 4-0.

Mosta coach Kenenth Costantino made a number of changes during the second half with the Blues adding another four goals through Oriana Bedingfield on 48 minutes, Rachel Nolan on 56 and 57 minutes and Anne Marie Muscat on 81 minutes.

Champions Birkirkara beat Pembroke Athleta 9-0 at the Charles Abela Stadium

They took the lead on 21 minutes thanks to Gabriella Zahra and three goals late in the first half through Stephania Farrugia on 37 minutes, Raina Giusti on 40 minutes and Gabriella Zahra on the 44th gave the Stripes a four-goal lead at half-time. Zahra completed a hat-trick three minutes in the second half. Rachel Cuschieri made it 6-0 on 51 minutes and two minutes later, Stephania Farrugia added another one. On the hour, Maryrose Cardona scored the eighth goal and eight minutes later, Kelly Agius Pace sealed the issue with a ninth goal.

At the Luxol Stadium, Hibernians defeated Mgarr United 5-1.

The Paolites were a better side taking the lead on the 12th minute through Ylenia Carabott. They doubled the score two minutes in the second half with a goal by Corissa Vella and Ruth Steer Chetham scored a third goal on 65 minutes. The dismissal of goalkeeper Marie Claire Tabone complicated matters further for Mgarr. Ylenia Carabott converted a penalty for Hiberniansand although Antoinette Sammut pulled one back for Mgarr, Carabott scored Hibs’ fifth goal eight minutes from time.

In a windy Sunday morning at the Sannat Ground, Gozo FC defeated Tarxien Rainbows 8-0. Tracy Theuma scored no less than four goals with Jessica Scerri, Samantha Vella and Julia Vella scoring the other goals.

Meanwhile in the BOV Women’s Second Division, Fgura United and St. Venera Yellow Blues closed in on second-placed Kirkop United as they both registered wins.

Fgura United returned to winning ways as they beat Lija/Iklin 6-0 at the Fgura Ground.

Although Fgura had the lion’s share of ball-possession during the first half, they failed to score but once they managed to break the deadlock one minute in the second half, through Claire Grerada, they never looked back adding another five goals – three by Eliana Gialanze on 51, 59 and 65 minutes, Alyssa Cachia on 73 minutes, Jackie Abdilla on 83 minutes and once again Alyssa Cachia on the 90th.

St. Venera Yellow Blues registered a second successive win, beating Vittoriosa Stars 4-1 at the Zebbug Ground.

Daniela Farrugia notched a hat-trick with goals on 27, 49 and 71 minutes. Former St. Venera player Shazel Grima reduced the gap for the Stars on 85 minutes but Christine Dalli scored a fifth goal for the Yellow-Blues.
