Rainbows seek second place

Tarxien Rainbows will be all out for the three points on Sunday as they take on Floriana in one of the two BOV Premier League matches in programme at the Hibernians Stadium.

The Rainbows are currently joint-fifth with Sliema Wanderers on 27 points and a win over Floriana would not only put them a step closer to securing a place in the Championship Pool but also put them in second place on level points with Valletta and Birkirkara.

Tarxien are coming from three successive wins after defeating Sliema Wanderers, Hamrun Spartans and Balzan.

For Floriana, this is possibly one of the last chances of maintaining the challenge for a place in the Championship Pool as they are currently seventh on 20 points, seven behind Sliema and Tarxien. The Greens are coming from a series of five positive results and held Birkirkara in a 1-1 draw in their last outing.

However Floriana lost Aman Verma and Sunday Wasiu following a decision by the association over unpaid salaries. To make matters worse, Clyde Borg is ruled out as he serves a one-match ban. Carlo Mamo and Karl Pulo are both recovering from injuries for Tarxien.

In the first round, Tarxien beat Floriana 3-2.

Meanwhile in the second match, Qormi take on Hamrun Spartans. Four points separate the two teams with Qormi lying in the ninth place on 17 points and Hamrun tenth on 13.

The spartans hope to end their negative run which saw them suffer six consecutive defeats, the last being a 0-3 defeat to Mosta. Qormi, on the other hand, lost to Valletta and Sliema, in their last two games and seek a win to stay away from the danger zone.

Abubakar Bello-Osagie is suspended for Qormi while Angel Yoshev is ruled out for Hamrun. The Spartans however welcome back Anton Vergilov and Roderick Fenech.

In the first round, Hamrun registered a 1-0 win.
