Former Hibernians midfielder Essien Mbong passed away at the age of 37.

After starting his career with Julius Berger in his native country Nigeria, Mbong moved to Malta in 1998 to join Hibernians. He spent eight years with the Paolites before moving to Marsa in summer 2006. The following season, he joined Tarxien Rainbows in Division 1.

Mbong later played for Senglea Athletic.

The eldest son of Essien Mbong is Malta Under-17 international Joseph Mbong.
