Birkirkara and Valletta know their opponents should they overcome the challenge by NK Maribor and FC Minsk in the second legs of the second qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League respectively as the draws for the third qualifying rounds of the two UEFA competitions were held in Nyon on Friday.

Should Birkirkara qualify for the next stage, they will be facing APOEL FC of Cyprus with the first leg being played in Cyprus. Valletta, on the other hand, would face the winner of the clash between Norwegian side Rosenborg BK and St. Johnstone of Scotland. The first leg would be played at Ta’ Qali.

In the first legs, Birkirkara held NK Maribor in a goalless draw at Ta’ Qali in the UEFA Champions League while Valletta were held in a 1-1 draw by FC Minsk in the UEFA Europa League.

A 1-1 draw would be enough for Birkirkara to reach the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. Valletta, on the other hand, would need a 2-2 draw as with a 1-1 draw, the game would go into extra-time. In either case, a win would mean qualification while a defeat would lead to elimination.

APOEL had already met Birkirkara in the UEFA Cup 2005/06, defeating them 2-0 at Ta’ Qali and 4-0 in Nicosia. On the other hand, this will be a first time for both Rosenborg and St. Johnstone in Malta.

Meanwhile Birkirkara will receive €200,000 from UEFA as champions and should they eliminate NK Maribor, they would receive a further €170,000. Teams taking part in the UEFA Europa League receive €120,000. Since Valletta qualified from the first qualifying round, they received a further €130,000. Should they qualify for the second qualifying round, they would receive €140,000.
