Birkirkara, Hibernians target first honour as season 2013/14 kicks-off on Wednesday

BOV-Super-CupSeason 2013/14 kicks-off on Wednesday as BOV Premier League champions Birkirkara take on U*BET FA Trophy winners Hibernians in the BOV Super Cup at the National Stadium, kick-off at 20:00.

After finishing their commitments on level points last season, the Stripes claimed the title thanks to a 3-1 win in a decider with Hibernians winning the FA Trophy in a 3-1 win over Qormi to get some consolation.

Both sides now target a win in this competition to start the season on a positive note.

Birkirkara were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round following a goalless draw at Ta’ Qali and a 2-0 defeat to NK Maribor in Slovenia. Hibernians, on the other hand, lost 1-4 to FK Vojvodina in the UEFA Europa League first qualifying round but did much better in Serbia, losing narrowly 3-2.

The Paolites hardly had any changes in their squad apart from the appointment of Branko Nisevic as their new coach. Steve Pisani, who returned for Hibs in the European qualifiers, will re-join Floriana on another loan deal.

Birkirkara, on the other hand, following the departure of Rodrigo Pereira and Jhonnattann Benites da Conceicao and the release of Joselito dos Reis, Yosimar Gonzales Hernandez, have just lost Nikola Vukanac who returns to Serbia. The new faces in the Stripes squad this season are Brazilian defender Jonathan Guillermo Maciel and strikers Demba Toure and Frank Temile. Spanish defender Richard, who was part of the Birkirkara squad in Europe, was not retained while other new foreigners are on the way to join the club for a trial.

Birkirkara target the sixth success in the BOV Super Cup after winning the competition for five consecutive years between 2002 and 2006. Hibernians, on the other hand, won the competition twice.
