U*BET FA Trophy: Another seven teams through to third round

UBET-FA-TROPHY-logoTwo clubs from the BOV First Division, three from the BOV Second Division, one from the BOV Third Division and a Gozitan club qualified for the third round of the U*BET FA Trophy as they emerged as winners in the seven second round clashes which were played on Saturday.

At the Sirens Stadium, BOV Third Division leaders Sirens reached the next stage thanks to a 1-0 win over Second Division side Marsa. Giovanni Galea scored the all-important goal for the St. Paul’s Bay side.

In another match at the same venue, First Division side St. Andrews defeated Mgarr United from Division Three 3-0. Trayo Grozev put Luxol ahead after just ten minutes. Emiliano Lattes converted a penalty on 78 minutes to double the score and Clyde Cumbo sealed the issue with a third goal a minute later.

Another First Division side, Lija Athletic, who had reached the semi-finals last year, beat Gozitan First Division side Xewkija Tigers 4-0 at the Luxol Stadium thanks to goals by Kiril Aleksandrov on the 40th, Andre Grabowski on the 71st, Ryan Sell on the 79th and Dejan Vukovic on the 83rd.

Second Division sides Senglea Athletic and Siggiewi both needed extra-time to win and make it to the third round.

Senglea defeated another team from Division Two – Kirkop United 4-2 at the Charles Abela Stadium. Shawn Micallef put Kirkop ahead on the 7th, Marko Milutinovic equalised on the 26th but two minutes from the end of the first half, Kirkop regained the lead thanks to another goal by Micallef. Trevor Thomas forced extra-time with a goal on the 67th. Three minutes in the first half of extra-time, Glenn Brincat put Senglea ahead for the first time and three minutes in added time at the end of the first half of extra-time, Rennie Tanti sealed the issue with a fourth goal.

Siggiewi, on the other hand, defeated Third Division side Swieqi United 5-2 at the Luxol Stadium. Swieqi went two goals ahead but after reducing the gap and having a player sent off, Joey Falzon’s side still managed to equalise just before the final whistle to force extra-time. Siggiewi scored three in extra-time to reach the next stage.

Pembroke Athleta found no difficulty in beating Ta’ Xbiex from Division Three 6-0 at the Charles Abela Stadium. The score at the end of the first half was 2-0, courtesy of goals by Nicholas Schembri and Adrian Galea on 25 and 40 minutes respectively. Mark Borg (65′), Adrian Galea (74′), Nicholas Schembri (80′) and Carmelo Farrugia (85′) added another four after the break.

In an all-Gozitan clash, and also a Victoria derby, Victoria Hotspurs defeated Oratory Youths 3-0 at the Gozo Stadium. Jason Pace put the Hotspurs ahead on 24 minutes and a brace by Warren Chircop on 49 and 53 minutes handed them victory.
