Qormi end disappointing run

mosta-qormi131027JBAfter losing four out of the last five matches, Qormi returned to winning ways as they managed to beat Mosta 2-1.

Mosta, on the other hand, conceded the third consecutive defeat which leaves them in sixth place, one point behind rivals Naxxar Lions.

Both sides were unable to field their best formation as Francesco D’Aniello and Jorge Pereira da Silva were missing for Qormi while Mosta lacked Diego Pereira and Ryan Grech.

Qormi had the first attempt at goal on the 16th minute with a Christian Terribile effort which was turned into a corner by Omar Borg.

Three minutes later, Qormi took the lead when Alfred Effiong stole the ball off an opponent on the left and beat Omar Borg with a low shot.

Mosta replied with a Cristian Martins Fernandes freekick ending just over the bar. Just before half-time, the Blues appealed for a penalty but referee Glen Tonna waved play on.

Twelve minutes in the second half, Effiong served Owen Bugeja whose low shot from an ideal position inside the area was blocked by the Mosta goalkeeper. A freekick by Triston Caruana scraped past the post a minute later.

Another appeal for a penalty for what seemed to be a foul inside the Qormi penalty area was turned down by the referee. A fine Ricardinho effort ended just wide on the 70th.

Mosta levelled matters five minutes later when Manolito Micallef’s shot from the left was deflected by Owen Bugeja past goalkeeper Matthew Farrugia.

On the 79th, Qormi were awarded a penalty after referee Omar Borg floored substitute Federico Santaguida. From the penalty spot, Roderick Bajada converted.

In the dying minutes, Mosta increased the pressure in search of the equaliser and one minute in added time, Cristian Martins Fernandes had a goal-bound effort cleared off the goal line by Jonathan Bondin.
