U*BET FA Trophy: Last eight teams through to third round

FA TrophyThe final eight teams to reach the third round of the U*BET FA Trophy were Pietà Hotspurs, Gzira United, Melita, Mdina Knights, San Gwann, Mqabba, Kercem Ajax and SK Victoria Wanderers as they emerged as winners in the second round clashes in programme on Sunday.

The Centenary Stadium features two clashes between teams from the BOV First Division. Pietà Hotspurs defeated neighbours Hamrun Spartans 1-0 courtesy of a Quilin Refalo goal six minutes from time.

In another match, Gzira United defeated Zurrieq 5-1. Martin Kotyza put Gzira ahead on the 3rd minute and doubled the score four minutes from the end of the first half. Just before half-time, Bjorn Bondin scored a third goal and one minute in the second half, Joseph JoJo Ogunuppe made it 4-0. An own goal by Nicholas Abdilla put the Maroons five goals ahead before Daniel Zammit scored a consolation goal for Zurrieq on 89 minutes.

First Division side Melita defeated Gozitan side Nadur Youngsters 3-0 at the Sirens Stadium. Finnish striker Markko Hovi Kimmo put the Amateurs ahead on 35 minutes and doubled the score on the 77th. Mark Hyzler made it 3-0 three minutes in added time.

On the other hand, Gozitans SK Victoria Wanderers defeated Second Division side Marsaskala 1-0 thanks to a goal by Joel Xuereb after just three minutes.

Mdina Knights came from behind to beat Fgura United 2-1 in a clash between two Second Division sides at the Luxol Stadium. Abeeb Abiodun Williams put Fgura ahead after just five minutes but second-half goals by Andrea Muscat and Mark Cremona on 63 and 75 minutes.

In another match, San Gwann from Division Two beat Third Division side Marsaxlokk 4-0. Peter Xuereb put San Gwann ahead on the 5th minute. Shaun Vella scored twice on 34 and 43 minutes to increase the lead further and nine minutes in the second half, Nicky Muscat sealed the issue with a fourth goal.

At the Gozo Stadium, Kercem Ajax defeated Division Three side Luqa St. Andrew’s 2-1. Nikolai Slavtchev put Luqa ahead on 14 minutes but a minute later, John Camilleri equalised. Jean Paul Mizzi notched the winner on 63 minutes.

In another match, Second Division side Mqabba beat Gozitans Xaghra United 1-0 thanks to a goal by Clayton Micallef on 27 minutes.

The teams to reach the third round are therefore Birzebbuga St. Peter’s, Gudja United, St. George’s, Zebbug Rangers, St. Andrews, Lija Athletic, Pietà Hotspurs, Melita and Gzira United from the BOV First Division; Mellieha, Siggiewi, Senglea Athletic, Pembroke Athleta, Mdina Knights, Mqabba and San Gwann from the BOV Second Division; Sirens from the BOV Third Division and Gozitan sides Victoria Hotspurs, Kercem Ajax and SK Victoria Wanderers.

They will be joined by the twelve Premier League clubs. The draws will be held on Thursday with the games scheduled between the 22nd and 27th November.
