Sliema, Valletta to contest Gozo Cup final

Gozo StadiumSliema Wanderers and Valletta emerged as winners in the two semi-finals of the Gozo Cup which was played at the Gozo Stadium on Friday. The two teams will be therefore facing each other in Sunday’s final which kicks-off at 17:00.

The three Premier League clubs taking part in the tournament could not field their best formations as both the senior national team and the Under-21 national team players are on international duty.

In the first semi-final, a goal by Axl Xuereb on the 4th minute gave Sliema Wanderers a narrow win over hosts Gozo XI.

On the other hand, Valletta defeated Hibernians 5-3.

Raimi Bakere, who was earlier on trial with Birkirkara, put the Citizens ahead on the 7th minute. Obinna Obiefule levelled matters on 38 minutes but goals by Lateef Elford on the 50th and a brace by Denni on 63 and 75 minutes put the Citizens 4-1 ahead. Obiefule scored twice on 80 and 87 minutes to reduce the gap but former Birkirkara and Livorno striker Luke Montebello made it 5-3 one minute from time.

On Sunday, Hibernians and Gozo XI will play for third place, kick-off at 15:00.
