Valletta win Gozo Cup

valletta-win-gozo-cup2013Valletta won this year’s edition of the Gozo Cup after defeating Sliema Wanderers 3-1 in the final on Sunday.

Following a goalless first half, Luke Dimech put Valletta ahead on 49 minutes. Pape Gueye equalised on the 65th but Abdelkarim Nafti made it 2-1 for Valletta two minutes later, Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza scored the third goal for Valletta on 75 minutes.

Meanwhile Gozo XI placed third after defeating Hibernians 3-1. Obinna Obiefule put the Paolites ahead on the 27th minute but a goal by Saturday Nanapere on 52 minutes, an own goal by Dunstan Vella and a goal by Sunday Baala on 77 minutes gave victory to the hosts.

In another match on Sunday, the Malta Under-17 side defeated the Gozo Under-19 selection 4-2.

Damon Hili put the Gozitans ahead on the 4th minute. Jake Grech levelled matters five minutes in the second half when he converted a penalty, adding another goal on the 63rd minute. Luca Brincat made it 3-1 on 66 minutes. Andrea Debrincat scored a second goal for the Gozitans on 69 minutes but Luke Galea made it 4-2 for the Malta Under-17 side.

Meanwhile on Saturday, Gozo won the Women’s Triangular Tournament after defeating Pembroke Athleta 1-0 and Mgarr United 3-0.

In the first game, Mgarr United defeated Pembroke Athleta 1-0 thanks to a goal by Brenda Borg on 34 minutes. Gozo defeated Pembroke Athleta 1-0, courtesy of a Joslene Gafa goal on 27 minutes.

The third game between Mgarr and Gozo therefore proved decisive with the hosts winning 3-0 thanks to goals by Emma Xuereb on 8 and 32 minutes and Tracy Theuma on the 19th.

Meanwhile in a statement, the Gozo Football Association thanked all those involved in the organization of the Gozo Cup for their great job and all participating teams and nurseries for their cooperation.

The association thanked the Minister of Gozo Dr. Anton Refalo for entrusting it with the organization of the sports events.
