BOV Women's League: Hibernians keep marching on

bov-women-first-division-2013-2014Leaders Hibernians keep marching on in the BOV Women’s First Division thanks to a comfortable 9-1 win over Pembroke Athleta at the Pembroke Ground. Hibs now lead the table with maximum points from six matches, three points ahead of Birkirkara and six ahead of Gozo.

The Paolites were clearly the better side, taking a three-goal lead after just sixteen minutes. A freekick by Charlene Zammit on the 8th minute hit the crossbar before ending at the back of the net. Two minutes later, Ylenia Carabott beat Baldacchino with a well-placed shot from the edge of the area while Kathleen Saliba made it 3-0 when a Martina Borg effort seemed heading wide but the ball was deflected by Saliba to beat the Pembroke goalkeeper. Martha Sammut reduced the gap on the 20th, heading the ball home off a Sonia Schembri corner. This was the first goal conceded by the Hibs rear-guard. On the half-hour, Martina Borg concluded a solo effort by advancing into the area before slotting past Baldacchino.

Two minutes in the second half, Martina Borg added another after Baldacchino failed to hold a cross by Dorianne Theuma. Ylenia Carabott deflected the ball off a Dorianne Theuma corner for Pembroke’s sixth goal on 52 minutes. A Dorianne Theuma freekick hit the bar with Ruth Steer Chatham heading the ball home on the 59th to make it 7-1. Ylenia Carabott scored her third goal after concluding a solo effort with a shot from the edge of the area three minutes from time and just before the final whistle, following a good run by Mandy Debono on the right, she served Nicole Borg who beat RoseMarie Baldacchino and seal the issue with a ninth goal.

Birkirkara kept the pace with the leaders as they defeated Mgarr United 3-1 at the Mgarr Ground.

The Stripes took the lead on the 15th when a Gabriella Zahra effort was partially saved by Cremona and Martina Cilia hit home off the rebound. Mgarr improved and managed to equalise on the 65th thanks to Jasmine Vella Turner, served by Brenda Borg. However five minutes later, Birkirkara regained the lead when Alishia Sultana provided Rachel Cuschieri with a good assist and the latter beat the Mgarr goalkeeper with a shot from outside the area. Five minutes from time, the Stripes added another as Rachel Cuschieri converted a penalty after a defender handled the ball inside the area.

At the Zebbug Ground, Kirkop United defeated Raiders (Luxol) 1-0.

Kirkop were the better side during the first half, going close to taking the lead through Jade Flask but it was Krystle Attard who managed to break the deadlock. Raiders pressed hard for the equaliser but Kirkop managed to take home the three points.

bov-women-second-division-2013-2014In the BOV Women’s Second Division, leaders Tarxien Rainbows defeated Vittoriosa Stars 13-0 at the Tarxien Ground. This was the sixth win in as many matches.

Francesca Cauchi put the Rainbows ahead after just two minutes with a volley from outside the area. Kristine Camilleri doubled the score on the 12th minute and in two minutes’ time, Francesca Cauchi and Janice Zahra increased the lead to 4-0. Cauchi added another goal on the 18th and a few minutes later, Tarxien made it 6-0 as a Kim Magro effort was not held by goalkeeper Shazel Gera with the ball ending at the back of the net. The Rainbows scored the seventh goal on 35 minutes thanks to a Janice Zahra freekick and three minutes later, Chantel Spiteri headed the ball home to make it 8-0. Goalkeeper Shazel Gera committed another own goal one minute from the end of the first half for Tarxien’s ninth goal.

Two minutes in the second half, Francesca Cauchi scored her fourth goal and on the 54th minute, the same player made it 11-0. A direct freekick by Kristine Camilleri put Tarxien twelve goals ahead before Leanne Mifsud made it 13-0 with a powerful shot from outside the area.

Hamrun Spartans defeated Lija/Iklin 6-1 at the Zebbug Ground.

Sofia Takanaki put the Spartans ahead on the 6th minute and Raissa Grixti doubled the score three minutes later when off Simone Buttigieg corner, a Daniela Farrugia effort was blocked by a defender and Grixti placed the ball at the back of the net off the rebound. Sofia Takanaki beat the Lija/Iklin goalkeeper with a first-timer on the 26th minute off a cross by Raissa Grixti for the third goal and nine minutes from the end of the first half, Orianne Cassar scored with a powerful shot from outside the area. Sofia Takanaki completed a hat-trick with another goal on 59 minutes for the Spartans’ fifth goal. Norelle Galea reduced the gap with a solo effort on the 80th minute but Orianne Cassar sealed the issue with a sixth goal with a direct freekick.
