Xewkija Tigers retained the top spot in the Melita First Division in Gozo as they registered a dramatic win over Xaghra United with Nadur Youngsters being held in a draw by Kercem Ajax.
Kercem, in fact, held the Youngsters in a goalless draw, therefore denying them the chance to move to just two points behind Xewkija despite having a game in hand.
On the other hand, Xewkija defeated Xaghra 2-1. Manwel Xerri put Xewkija ahead on 50 minutes but Chidi Achokwu levelled matters a minute later. The game seemed heading for a draw but three minutes in added time, Dene Shields notched the winner for the Tigers.
On Thursday, Xaghra United collected their first three points as they beat Munxar Falcons 3-1. Frank Attard gave Xaghra a two-goal lead with goals on the 14th and 29th. Joseph Grima pulled one back on 58 minutes but a goal by Victor John Saliba nine minutes from time sealed the issue for Xaghra
Xewkija lead the way with 30 points, followed by Nadur on 26, SK Victoria Wanderers 25, Kercem 21, Victoria Hotspurs 20, Oratory 13, Xaghra and Munxar 3.
Meanwhile in the Melita Second Division, Sannat Lions defeated Ghajnsielem 4-2. Goals by Nicholas Micallef, Fabian Xuereb and a brace by Fernando de Andrade put the Lions four goals ahead within the first 36 minutes with the Blacks reducing the gap with goals by Matthew Portelli and Robert Grima.
St. Lawrence Spurs, on the other hand, defeated Qala Saints 2-1. Lionell Nyemso put Qala ahead but the Spurs turned the score in their favour with goals by Mambaye Boye and Franklin Grima.
