Xewkija Tigers move a step closer to title

Gozo-Football-AssociationXewkija Tigers moved a step closer to securing the Melita First Division championship in Gozo after defeating Victoria Hotspurs 5-2 on Sunday.

Chris Camilleri put the Tigers ahead on 33 minutes and just before half-time, Dene Shields doubled the score. Shields scored again on 56 minutes with Chris Camilleri adding another on 68 minutes. John Camilleri made it 5-0 on 79 minutes before goals by Dylan Bellotti and Glenn Bonello in the final five minutes made the score more respectable for the Hotspurs.

In another Championship Pool clash, SK Victoria Wanderers defeated Nadur Youngster to stay in the hunt for the title.

Daniel Bogdanovic put SKVW ahead on 61 minutes but Saviour Attard was quick to level matters for Nadur. However Eric Nwankwo notched the winner for the Wanderers on the 68th.

With two games to go, Xewkija lead by five points and therefore a win in the next game against Nadur would be enough to secure the title.

Meanwhile in a match from the Relegation Pool on Thursday, Kercem Ajax beat Munxar Falcons 2-0 thanks to goals by Andrew Mizzi on 26 minutes and a penalty by Jean Paul Mizzi seven minutes from time.

In the Melita Second Division, Sannat Lions closed in on leaders St. Lawrence Spurs after defeating them 2-1 in a top-of-the-table clash. Luke Attard and Fernando de Andrade put Sannat two goals ahead before Michael Vella pulled one back for the leaders.

St. Lawrence lead with 39 points, followed by Sannat on 37 and Ghajnsielem on 33. The Blacks however have a game in hand.

Ghajnsielem defeated Gharb Rangers 7-0 in another match thanks to goals by Milan Markovic (2), Kenny Hili (2), Charlon Tabone and Joseph Attard (2).

On Wednesday, St. Lawrence Spurs beat Zebbug Rovers 3-2. Louis Buttigieg and Mambaye Boye put the Spurs two goals ahead. Pedro Adame Calderon reduced the gap and although Daniel Pace restored the lead for St. Lawrence, Calderon scored a second goal for the Rovers.

Sannat beat Qala Saints 3-1 in another match. Fernando de Andrade, Nicholas Micallef and Josiah Buttigieg scored for Sannat with Michael Mumford scoring a consolation goal for Qala.
