Futsal: Qrendi regain sole leadership

futsal2014amfgvnasanuQrendi regained sole leadership in the FXDD First Division as they found no difficulty in seeing off Santa Lucia 8-0. Antonello Brincat (4), Gorg Falzon, Luke Zammit, Clayton Borg and Ronald Spina put their names on the score sheet to help Qrendi return to winning ways and gain the three points.

In an entertaining match, Zebbug Rangers looked heading towards another win as they lead Gzira United by two goals for most of the time. Gzira however produced a remarkable comeback in the second half, scoring five goals within 12 minutes to turn the tables on their opponents and win 6-3 to stay in the hunt for promotion in the Premier Division. Josh Parry scored four goals for the Maroons while Alessio Restuccia hit a brace. Karstin Cilia hit the target three times for Zebbug.

Valletta dropped their first points in 2014 after being held to a 4-4 draw by Sirens. With maximum points from their last eleven matches, the Citizens looked set to extend their flawless start but found a great Sirens side who defended well and surged forward with good counter attacks. A draw against the former leaders provided a boost for Sirens who scored their important goals from Etienne Bonnici, Robert Darmanin, Patrick Barbara and Darren Atchinson. Dylan Agius notched a hat-trick for Valletta with Dassier Borg adding another.

Mqabba saw off Kalkara 8-4. The winners had the best ideas and dominated for long spells of the match. After ending the first half 4-2, Mqabba continued to score to make sure of the three points. Andre Ciancio hit the target three times, Steve Pace and Conrad Dimech scored a brace with Justin Psaila adding another one for Mqabba. Kalkara scored through a brace by Gerry Fabbro, Marc Tabone Ferrante and Duncan Bonello.

Meanwhile, Siggiewi leapfrogged Mqabba in the table as they surprisingly beat fifth-placed Naxxar Lions 2-1. After a 0-0 stalemate in the first half, Siggiewi gained a double advantage through James Borg and Benji Briffa. Naxxar made a late reaction when their opponents scored an own goal which was not enough to gain any points from this match.

Sixth-placed Fgura United narrowly defeated Msida St. Joseph 5-4 to register their tenth win of the season and stay in the top six positions of the table.
