Gozo: Xewkija celebrate title with dramatic win

Gozo-Football-AssociationXewkija Tigers celebrated the Melita First Division championship in style thanks to a dramatic 4-3 win over runners-up SK Victoria Wanderers who ended ten points behind the leaders.

Daniel Bogdanovic put the Wanderers ahead after just two minutes and although John Camilleri levelled matters for Xewkija on the 14th, Daniel Bogdanovic made it 2-1 on 36 minutes and three minutes in the second half, an own goal put them 3-1 ahead. However the champions bounced back with goals by Chris Camilleri on the 59th and Dene Shields on the 73rd to restore equilibrium. John Camilleri notched the winner nine minutes from time.

Dene Shields was declared top-scorer with eighteen goals.

Meanwhile in another match, Nadur Youngsters and Victoria Hotspurs shared the spoils in a 3-3 draw.

Brandon Said (9′) and Elton da Silva (17′) put Nadur two goals ahead; Aleandro Bezzina pulled one back on 22 minutes and Michael Bezzina equalised on the 45th. Saturday Nanapere had a penalty saved by the goalkeeper for the Hotspurs; Anthony Portelli made it 3-2 for Nadur with Glenn Bonello equalising on 67 minutes.

In the last match from the Relegation Pool, Xaghra United beat Munxar Falcons 4-1. Sunday Baala and Victor John Saliba scored two goals each for Xaghra with Roderick Spiteri scoring a consolation goal for Munxar.

Munxar Falcons will be playing in the Promotion/Relegation Play-Off with the runners-up of the Melita Second Division while Xaghra United were relegated.

Meanwhile in the Melita Second Division, the clash between St. Lawrence Spurs and Ghajnsielem next Saturday will determine whether the Spurs or Sannat Lions will be declared champions.

On Saturday, St. Lawrence Spurs defeated Qala Saints 3-0 thanks to a brace by Mambaye Boye and a goal by Daniel Pace. On the other hand, a hat-trick by Fernando de Andrade and a goal by Eric Gauci enabled Sannat Lions to beat Gharb Rangers 4-0.

Sannat ended their commitments on 43 points, one ahead of St. Lawrence Spurs who however have a game in hand. The Saints need a win from the clash against Ghajnsielem to secure the championship and promotion to the First Division.
