UEFA Under 17 Championship: First three points for the Netherlands

UEFA-Under-17-Malta2014-logoThe Netherlands collected the first three points in Group A as they beat Turkey 3-2 in a match that came to life in the second half at the National Stadium.

After a goalless first half during which Turkey had an edge over their opponents, Hakan Tecimer’s side managed to take the lead on 42 minutes when off a cross by Hasan Özkan from the left, Ertuğrul Ersoy headed the ball down for Enes Ünal swivels to hook in from close range.

However the Netherlands restored equilibrium on the 53rd minute thanks to a penalty by Calvin Verdonk after Bahadir Çiloğlu floored Steven Bergwijn inside the area.

The Dutch forged ahead on 68 minutes thanks to substitute Abdelhak Nouri who tapped the ball home from close range after Turkish goalkeeper Tarik Cetin partially saved a good shot from the right by Jari Schuurman.

Abdelhak Nouri sealed the issue with a third goal five minutes from time as he rounded a defender and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper from the edge of the area in a counter attack for the Netherlands.

Substitute Fatih Aktay reduced the gap for Turkey one minute from time with a great header from close range off a cross from the left by Emirhan Aydoğan.

On Monday, Turkey take on England at 11:15 while the Netherlands play Malta at 15:15. Both matches will be played at the Gozo Stadium.
