Shodiya brace puts Stripes back on track

Shola Shodiya scored at the end of the first half and another on the 90th minute to hand Birkirkara the three points for a 2-0 win over Qormi.

Qormi therefore remain joint-fourth from bottom as they have now gone seven matches without a win.

Birkirkara lacked the suspended Ryan Scicluna and Paul Fenech. Qormi, on the other hand, welcomed back Bjorn Bondin, Zoran Levnajic and Mauricio Mazzetti.

The Stripes had the first attempt at goal with a header by Shola Shodiya ending just over the bar off a cross by Camenzuli in the 16th. On the other side of the pitch, Temile sent Effiong through but his first conclusion was blocked and off the rebound he concluded high. A cross shot by Temile almost surprised Haber on 32 minutes but Zach Muscat cleared the ball into safety. Shola Shodiya then had a powerful shot blocked by a defender after a short clearance and one minute from the end of the first half, the Nigerian striker hit the upright with a header.

However one minute in added time, Shola Shodiya put Birkirkara ahead as he headed the ball over goalkeeper Matthew Farrugia following a cross by Edward Herrera.

Early in the second half, Qormi went in search of the equaliser with attempts by Duncan Pisani and Alfred Effiong. Frank Temile was then unlucky to hit the foot of the post on 58 minutes.

The Wanderers doubled the score on the 90th when Haruna Shola Shodiya concluded a solo effort with a shot which was partially saved by Farrugia but off the rebound, he placed the ball at the back of the net.
