BOV Division 1: Pembroke, St. Andrews share spoils in draw

St. Andrews re-joined Gudja United on top the BOV First Division table following a goalless draw with Pembroke Athleta in one of the four matches in programme on Sunday.

Pembroke, who were coming from two consecutive defeats, move alone in fourth place, three points behind the leaders and two behind Gzira United.

Lija Athletic came from behind to register a dramatic 2-1 win over Melita. Kane Micallef put Melita ahead on 13 minutes and three minutes from the end of the first half, Cleavon Frendo levelled matters. The game seemed heading for a draw but one minute in added time, Beppe Antignolo notched the winner for Lija.

St. George’s defeated Birzebbuga St. Peter’s 5-2. Jeremiah Ani put Birzebbuga ahead on the 20th but Larson Mallia equalised two minutes from the end of the first half and seven minutes in the second half, Mark Tanti turned the score in the Cospicua side’s favour. Anthony Bonello made it 3-1 on the hour and Dieu Merci Ditutala added another on the 74th. Edson Bonati scored a second goal for Birzebbuga three minutes later but Larson Mallia made it 5-2 two minutes from time.

Vittoriosa Stars and Rabat Ajax shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw. Carl Sammut put Vittoriosa ahead after just 8 minutes with Adam Smeir equalising on the 28th.

Gudja and St. Andrews lead the way with 30 points, followed by Gzira on 29, Pembroke 27, Melita and Fgura 26, St. George’s and Lija 25, Vittoriosa 23, Mqabba 19, Rabat 18, Msida 14, Zurrieq 11 and Birzebbuga 9.
