Futsal: Luxol, Balzan maintain good form

As another Premier Division round of matches was played at the Corradino Pavilion, title hopefuls Luxol and Balzan registered important victories over Mosta and Valletta respectively to gear up for the final play-offs.

Luxol dominated their game against Mosta from start to finish, winning it 12-2. After managing a 4-1 advantage before the break, Luxol continued with their intense pressure and it was hard for the Blues to hold their opponents attacking spree. Karl Saliba, William Barbosa and Ibrahim Tarek netted a hat-trick each, Celino Alves hit the target twice while George Frendo added another one for the league leaders. Mosta reduced the score from Eslam Khalifa and Laszlo Hayossy.

Balzan registered a fourth consecutive win after seeing off Valletta 5-1. Despite the scoreline, it was not an easy stroll for the Champions as the Citizens were a different lot from the team that struggled so much against the same opponents in the Knock-Out semi-final.

Mark Zammit, Boicho Marev, Glenn Bonello, Karl Azzopardi and Marco Conti were on the mark for the Champions as Melvin Borg found the net for the Citizens.

Swieqi United and Zebbug Rangers had to settle for a point each after an exciting 3-3 encounter while Gzira United and Qormi shared the spoils in a 4-4 draw.

In the First Division, Mellieħa were officially promoted to the Premier Division after cruising past Siggiewi 11-0. Nikolay Filipov hit the target five times, Robert Magro netted a brace while Daniel Saliba, Darren Aitchinson and an own goal provided the other goals for the Northseasiders.

Floren Manea and Zeljko Anicic were on the mark for league leaders Lija Athletics who beat Naxxar Lions 2-0 to maintain their championship intentions.

Msida St. Joseph made a step forward towards the final play-offs after having the better of Qrendi 5-4 with Gologan and Vukovic grabbing a brace each.

Attard ensure their place in the play-offs after beating Mqabba 4-1 while bottom placed Birzebbuga St. Peter’s stunned Luqa St. Andrew’s, defeating them 6-1.

Mdina Knights continued with their good form after seeing off Sirens 5-4 in a thrilling match.
