Women’s EURO: Georgia qualify as Faroe Islands beat Malta 4-2

Georgia won Group 2 of the UEFA Women’s EURO Preliminary Round due to a better record in the direct encounters after finishing on level points with Malta and Faroe Islands.

Malta needed a draw to secure a place in the Qualifying Round proper but suffered a 2-4 defeat to the Faroe Islands who however needed a larger win to qualify for the next stage. Therefore Georgia who had defeated the Faroe Islands 2-0 in the first game and then lost to Malta 1-2 in the second game, move on to the next round after beating Andorra 7-0.

At the Victor Tedsco Stadium, two quick goals by Rannvá Andreasen on the 13th and Milja Simonsen on the 15th put the Faroe Islands two goals ahead. However Ylenia Carabott pulled one back six minutes fro the end of the first half and substitute Martina Borg levelled matters four minutes in the second half. Faroe Islands captain Heidi Sevdal restored the lead on the 53rd and then sealed the issue with another goal on the 90th.

Meanwhile at the National Stadium, Georgia proved too strong for Andorra, beating them 7-0. Captain Tatiana Matveeva scored twice on the 3rd and on the 6th to put Georgia two goals ahead early in the game. Lela Chichinadze made it 3-0 on the 25th and a minute later, Khatia Tchkonia added another. Tchkonia scored another three goals in the second half – a penalty on the 69th and goals on the 83rd and 85th.
