BOV First Division championship at stake on Friday evening

The BOV First Division championship will be at stake on Friday as Melita take on St. Andrews at the Centenary Stadium and Pembroke Athleta face St. George’s at the Luxol Stadium. Both matches kick-off at 19:30.

Pembroke lead the way with 52 points, followed by St. Andrews on 50. A win is a must for Pembroke to celebrate a third consecutive promotion with the championship title. In the first round, Jacques Scerri’s side defeated St. George’s 1-0.

Luxol have to beat neighbours and rivals Melita, hoping that Pembroke fail to beat St. George’s. In the first round, St. Andrews beat Melita 2-1.

However their job will be no easy task as both Melita and St. George’s are chasing third place together with Gzira United and Gudja United.

Melita are currently third on 44 points, followed by Gzira on 42, Gudja and St. George’s on 41.

A win for Melita would enable them to secure the Premier League play-off spot against the team finishing third from bottom in the BOV Premier League.

On Saturday, Gzira United take on Mqabba at 16:00 and Gudja United face Lija Athletic at 18:00. A win for Gzira over Mqabba would enable them to reach third place if Melita lose to St. Andrews. In case of a win for Gzira and a draw for Melita, a decider for third place would be necessary.

Gudja and St. George’s have to win, hoping that both Melita lose and Gzira fail to beat Mqabba.
