Battle to avoid relegation play-off takes centre stage

Mosta, Naxxar Lions, Qormi and Tarxien Rainbows will be all out to avoid the BOV Premier League Play-Off as three matches will be played concurrently on Friday at 19:30.

Naxxar Lions are currently seventh on 22 points, followed by Qormi and Mosta on 21 points and Tarxien 20.

Mosta take on Naxxar Lions at the National Stadium, Zebbug Rangers face Qormi at the Hibernians Stadium while Tarxien Rainbows meet Pietà Hotspurs.

Zebbug and Pietà were condemned to playing in Division 1 last week following Tarxien’s win over the Rangers.

Their opponents on Friday – Qormi and Tarxien – would secure Premier League status should they register wins, leaving the issue to be decided in the derby between Mosta and Naxxar.

Tarxien won three out of the last four matches but are yet to register a first win over the Hotspurs following two goalless draws in the first two rounds. Pietà, on the other hand, lost eight out of the last ten matches.

Qormi registered two wins in the last two games but are yet to defeat Zebbug this season. In the first round, the two teams shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw with the second round clash ending in a 1-0 win for Zebbug.

In the direct clash between Mosta and Naxxar, a draw would be enough for Jesmond Zerafa’s side to secure Premier League status. Mosta, on the other hand, have to win. In case of a draw, they hope that Tarxien fail to beat Pietà. Mosta and Naxxar shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw in the first round with Naxxar winning 2-1 in the second round.

The team finishing tenth will be facing Gzira United in the BOV Premier League Play-Off on May 15.
