Mosta, Gzira fight for Premier League spot

Mosta and Gzira United will be battling for a place in the BOV Premier League next season as the two teams FA each other in the Play-Off at the National Stadium on Friday, kick-off at 19:30.

The Blues finished tenth in the BOV Premier League following a 1-2 defeat to neighbours Naxxar Lions in a decisive clash last week. The Maroons, on the other hand, finished third in the BOV First Division after claiming third place by defeating Melita on penalties in a decider after both ended their commitments on level points, behind champions Pembroke Athleta and runners-up St. Andrews.

Mosta won four out of the first five matches but five consecutive defeats saw them lose ground. They registered two wins in the next three matches but then won just one of the next twelve games. Just two wins from the last eight matches left the Blues third from bottom.

Gzira had started the season on rather low-key after collecting just ten points from the first nine matches but seven wins in the next eight matches put them back on track. They lost three out of the next five matches but bounced back with three wins out of the last four games to join Melita in third place.

Throughout the season, both clubs replaced their coach. Mosta started the season under the guidance of Enrico Piccioni but following his resignation, his assistant Peter Smith took over. Gzira, on the other hand, were led by Michael Woods but following the termination of his contract, he was replaced by Darren Abdilla.

The two teams already met this season in the fourth round of the FA Trophy when Mosta defeated Gzira 4-1.
